The Boston Bruins placed forward Mikey Eyssimont on waivers Sunday. If he clears Monday, he will report to the Providence Bruins.

The 30-year-old forward made Boston’s roster out of training camp after a strong preseason that included two goals against the Philadelphia Flyers. He sat out Boston’s opening three games of the season.

The terms of the Mikey Eyssimont waiver move

Eyssimont carries a $1,450,000 cap hit in the final year of a two-year contract signed July 1, 2025. He will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.

If he clears waivers and is assigned to Providence, Boston would be on the hook for a buried cap hit of $225,000, while the balance comes off the NHL roster’s books. Any other NHL team can claim him off waivers before he reports to the AHL.

Mikey Eyssimont waivers and the Bruins’ roster need

The move clears a spot that could accommodate Matthew Poitras, who returned to practice Thursday after a lower-body injury suffered in training camp and remains on injured reserve. According to Yahoo Sports, the waiver move frees roster space for Poitras’ eventual return. Bruins coach Marco Sturm said Poitras was “feeling better every day,” and general manager Don Sweeney said the center must clear the return-to-play process before rejoining the lineup, without giving a specific timeline.

Eyssimont made the opening-night roster as Boston’s 13th forward after skating alongside Tanner Jeannot and Dans Locmelis for much of camp. Sturm praised his camp performance before the regular season began. “He’s been very focused throughout camp.

Every day, he’s been good, and he’s playing with pace; he’s played with grit, he’s been really good,” Sturm said. “This kid has been around in the league for a little bit too now, and I think he realized now he also needs to step up his game, because he really wants to make the team, and that’s good. He’s going to make it hard on me, and that’s good.”

Eyssimont’s background

According to Daily Faceoff, Eyssimont posted 18 points on eight goals and 10 assists in 56 games for Boston last season. For his career, he has 74 points (33 goals, 41 assists) in 269 games across five NHL teams: Boston, Seattle, Tampa Bay, San Jose and Winnipeg. Los Angeles selected him in the fifth round, 142nd overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

He has not appeared in an AHL game since Nov. 6, 2022, when he played for the Manitoba Moose. Should he clear waivers and report to Providence, it would be his first AHL assignment in four years.

What’s next

Eyssimont’s waiver period runs through Monday. If no team claims him, he reports to Providence of the AHL. If a team does claim him, that club inherits his contract and he departs the Bruins organization.
