Miami’s path to the No. 1 ranking runs through a scoreboard, not a committee room. The Hurricanes needed double overtime to beat Florida State 43-35 on Saturday night, and the result leaves Miami positioned to top the new poll when it comes out Sunday. This ranking looks at the Miami No. 1 ranking case built on Saturday’s survival act and what the Hurricanes still have to prove.
1. Miami Hurricanes (6-0, 4-0 ACC)
Miami entered its game against Florida State ranked No. 3 and left as the clearest beneficiary of a chaotic weekend that saw five of the top seven teams lose. Quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, completing 23 of 34 passes, while Malachi Toney caught 11 passes for 154 yards and two scores. Javian Mallory added 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Bryce Fitzgerald sealed the win with an end-zone interception on the final play, stopping a Florida State comeback bid.
The Hurricanes carry the nation’s top-ranked scoring offense at 49.6 points per game and the top-ranked scoring defense at 9.8 points per game, numbers that explain why Miami was a 19.5-point favorite over a Florida State team that fell to 3-4. Mensah had opened his Miami career with 153 straight passes without an interception before throwing one in the third quarter, a blemish that did not stop him from leading the winning drive. “This is what great teams do, find a way to win,” Mensah said after the victory.
Miami has not been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll since 2002, and coach Mario Cristobal downplayed the significance of the number entering this week. “We have a good enough sample size of 2026 to know that’s absolutely insignificant and irrelevant with the changing of the guard from week to week. It just has no value to our processes and whatnot.
I’ll focus on the real ‘1’ that’s important, the 1-0,” Cristobal said. Miami improved to 7-3 all-time against Florida State in the last 10 meetings and now owns a 37-33 edge in the 71-game series, extending its win streak over the Seminoles to three.
2. Florida State Seminoles (3-4, 1-3 ACC)
Florida State pushed an undefeated, top-three opponent to double overtime at home and still walked away with its fourth loss of the season. The Seminoles’ record dropped to 1-3 in ACC play, a results-based regression for a program that had been within one defensive stand of knocking off Miami. The two-score margin Miami built with its offensive balance, 326 passing yards from Mensah paired with 108 rushing yards from Mallory, proved too much to overcome even after Florida State forced overtime.
3. The Rest Of The Contenders
Five of the seven teams that occupied the top of last week’s poll lost over the weekend, the kind of weekend that rearranges a season’s ranking math in a single news cycle. The details of which specific programs fell and where they landed were not available in the reporting on Miami’s win, but the scale of the upset weekend is why Miami’s 2OT survival act still counts as a résumé boost rather than a red flag. A team that was already No. 3 and remained unbeaten while others lost does not need a dominant performance to move up, it needs a win, and Miami got one.
What’s Next
Miami hosts Pittsburgh next Saturday looking to stay unbeaten at 6-0 and protect whatever ranking the new poll hands the Hurricanes. The 41-13 win over Clemson two weeks ago already showed Miami could blow out a quality opponent; now the question is whether the Hurricanes can look as sharp with a No. 1 target on their backs. Cristobal’s team will find out Sunday just how far Saturday night’s win carries them.
