Dallas Mavericks Outlook

Dallas sits at 1-2 and 2.0 games back in the Southwest Division, carrying a one-game losing streak into Miami. The Mavericks are shooting 50.8% from the field and 60.3% on two-point attempts, numbers that reflect an offense built around efficient interior and mid-range scoring rather than volume from deep. Kyrie Irving leads the team at 19.5 points per game, while P.J. Washington paces the rebounding effort at 7.0 boards a night.

Turnovers have been a problem. Dallas is giving the ball away 17.7 times per game, the highest mark between the two teams in this matchup, and that figure matters against a Heat defense that has forced extra possessions all season. The injury report compounds the issue.

Caleb Martin, Cooper Flagg, Naji Marshall, Tarik Biberovic and Santi Aldama are all listed as out, stripping the frontcourt rotation of five forwards. With that group sidelined, Washington is expected to see an expanded role alongside Irving and Marcus Sasser, who leads Dallas with 3.0 assists per game.

Miami Heat Outlook

Miami enters at 0-3, already 2.0 games behind the Southeast-leading trio of Atlanta, Charlotte and Washington, and riding a three-game losing streak that includes back-to-back losses to Detroit and Charlotte on Oct. 24. The Heat have been outscored in three of their last four games, including a 136-115 loss to Orlando and a 131-106 defeat to Minnesota.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has carried the scoring load, averaging 28.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, both team highs. Davion Mitchell has directed the offense with 8.7 assists per game. Miami’s shooting splits explain much of its early struggles: the Heat are hitting just 42.8% from the field and 30.3% from three-point range, both lower than Dallas’ marks across the board. Miami does hold an edge in ball security, turning the ball over 14.3 times per game compared to Dallas’ 17.7, a number the Heat will need to lean on if they hope to end their skid at home.

Key Matchup

The clearest advantage on paper belongs to whichever team wins the frontcourt rebounding battle. Dallas already holds a narrow edge in defensive rebounding at 31.3 per game to Miami’s 30.0, but the Mavericks are missing their top five healthy forwards in Martin, Flagg, Marshall, Biberovic and Aldama. That leaves Washington as the primary big tasked with containing Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 8.0 rebounds and shooting at a level that has made him Miami’s only consistent scoring threat through three games.

If Washington and the Dallas interior rotation cannot limit Antetokounmpo’s touches inside, Miami’s offense, which has otherwise struggled at 42.8% shooting, has its best path to a complement of easy baskets. Dallas, meanwhile, will look to exploit its 60.3% two-point shooting against a Heat defense that has allowed opponents to score at will in three straight losses.

Kyrie Irving, G, Dallas Mavericks

Irving leads the Mavericks in scoring at 19.5 points per game and remains the focal point of the Dallas offense with the frontcourt depleted by injuries.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, F, Miami Heat

Antetokounmpo leads Miami in both points (28.3) and rebounds (8.0) per game and is the Heat’s primary option in the halfcourt.

What To Watch

Miami is trying to avoid an 0-4 start, a mark that would place the Heat at the bottom of the Southeast standings alongside Orlando. Dallas, sitting at 1-2 with a 2.0 game deficit in the Southwest, is looking to build off its Oct. 23 win over Indiana rather than fall into a longer skid. With Dallas missing five forwards to injury and Miami still searching for its first win, both benches and depth rotations figure to play a larger role than usual in deciding Monday’s outcome.
