The Matt Murray recall is official: the Nashville Predators recalled the goaltender from the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL on Saturday, hours before they hosted the Dallas Stars at Bridgestone Arena.
General Manager Chris MacFarland announced the move, according to the Predators. The team did not name a starting goaltender for the game.
Matt Murray recall adds goaltending depth
Nashville opened its season Thursday at home against Minnesota and lost 3-1, as the Wild took the opener. The Predators opened the season with Juuse Saros and Justus Annunen as their two goaltenders, and Murray now joins the NHL roster.
The team did not say why it made the recall. It is a standard AHL-to-NHL move, not a trade or contract change.
Roman Josi scored Nashville’s only goal in the opener, a second-period tally. Minnesota got goals from Marcus Foligno, Blake Coleman and Kirill Kaprizov, with Coleman’s coming on the power play. Nashville returns to the ice Saturday needing a response against Dallas, and its goaltending depth chart now has a third option.
Who is Matt Murray?
Murray, 28, is a St. Albert, Alberta, native who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 196 pounds. He has an 87-58-14 record with a 2.52 goals-against average in the AHL. In four career NHL starts, all with Dallas, he is 2-2-0 with a 2.53 goals-against average.
Nashville assigned defenseman Ryan Ufko to Milwaukee on Friday.
What’s next for Nashville
Saturday’s game is a chance for Nashville to bounce back from the opening-night loss to Minnesota. As a recalled player, Murray is on the NHL roster and available to play or to serve as a backup, so the Matt Murray recall gives the Predators extra insurance in goal during a busy start to the 2026-27 season.
