Mathew Dumba has retired after 13 NHL seasons. The 32-year-old defenseman spent his final season bouncing between the Pittsburgh Penguins and their AHL affiliate before deciding to step away from professional hockey.

The 32-year-old defenseman spent his first 10 seasons with the Wild, who drafted him seventh overall in 2012, before finishing with stints at Arizona, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Pittsburgh.

Matt Dumba Retirement: The Announcement

Dumba told the Minnesota Star Tribune on Oct. 3 that he was retiring after delivering the “Let’s play hockey” call before the Wild home opener that night, according to NHL.com. Dumba explained his decision in blunt terms.

“I’m done,” Dumba said. “It was a good ride. But, yeah, just focusing on family now, and it’s been really special.”

In his final season, Dumba recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in 11 games with Pittsburgh and 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 27 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, their AHL affiliate.

A Career Built In Minnesota

His imprint on the Minnesota record books is lasting. He ranks fifth all-time among Wild defensemen in games played with 598, second in goals with 79, fourth in assists with 157 and fourth in points with 236.

Across his full NHL career, Dumba finished with 261 points on 85 goals and 176 assists in 748 games. In the postseason, he added 15 points in 54 games, with five goals and 10 assists.

In 2020, Dumba won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, an award given to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.
