Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel left Friday’s 35-33 win at Virginia Tech with an apparent leg injury and was seen on crutches afterward. On3 reported he was set to undergo an MRI on his right leg.
What Pitt has said about the Mason Heintschel injury
Heintschel was hurt at the end of a scramble in the third quarter when he was hit near the sideline, CBS Pittsburgh and Yahoo Sports reported. He did not return. Pitt had not announced a diagnosis or a timetable in the reports available Saturday.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi praised the team’s resilience after the game. “Just finding a different way to win,” Narduzzi said, according to ClutchPoints. “Our guys rode the wave and never gave in.”
Holden Geriner steps in and delivers
After the Mason Heintschel injury, backup Holden Geriner took over and threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Cataurus Hicks that put Pitt ahead 35-24 early in the fourth quarter, CBS Pittsburgh reported. Heintschel had thrown for 113 yards and a touchdown before leaving.
Virginia Tech pulled within two points, but its kicker missed a 36-yard field goal attempt as time expired. Geriner said, “This is what I’ve prayed for my whole life. My thoughts and prayers are with Mason.”

Pitt hosts North Carolina on Oct. 10, and the Mason Heintschel injury will shape its quarterback plan. If Heintschel cannot play, Geriner would be the likely starter, though the team has not announced a plan. The ESPN game recap has the official box score.
