Maple Leafs Outlook

Toronto enters on a four-game winning streak, including a 7-2 rout at Edmonton on Oct. 24 and a 5-4 win over the New York Rangers on Oct. 22 that was decided by a late Stecher goal. Auston Matthews leads the team and the matchup in goals (9), assists (10) and points (19). The Maple Leafs have scored 50 goals as a team this season against 40 allowed, and their .900 team save percentage ranks well ahead of Calgary’s .875.

Toronto’s injury list is lengthy. John Tavares remains on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and is not projected to return until Nov. 27, a timeline detailed in a previous report on his status. Dakota Joshua (abdomen), Marshall Rifai (lower body) and Nick Blankenburg (upper body) are also on injured reserve, while Miles Wood carries an undisclosed injury with a return date of Oct. 26. Sergei Bobrovsky is the probable starting goalie.

Flames Outlook

Calgary has won three straight, including a 4-1 win over Detroit on Oct. 25 and a 2-1 win over Minnesota on Oct. 23, after a 6-2 loss at Vegas on Oct. 16. Joel Farabee leads the Flames with nine points on two goals and seven assists, while Morgan Frost tops the team with three goals. Despite the recent surge, Calgary’s 3.90 goals-against average and .875 save percentage are both worse than Toronto’s marks, and the Flames have been outscored 39-23 in total goals this season.

Calgary’s injury report includes Jonathan Huberdeau, who remains on injured reserve following hip surgery with a projected return of Nov. 2, and Samuel Honzek, out with a lower-body injury and projected to return Oct. 28. Mikael Backlund is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and carries a return date of Oct. 26, the same day as this game. Dustin Wolf is the probable starting goalie for Calgary.

Key Matchup

Toronto’s offense against Calgary’s goaltending and penalty-killing will likely decide this game. The Maple Leafs have scored 50 goals on 372 shots for a 13.4% shooting rate, and their power play has converted 13 times this season. Calgary’s penalty kill has allowed opponents a share of its 39 total goals against, and its .875 team save percentage trails Toronto’s .900 mark by a wide margin. If Matthews and the Toronto forwards generate the same shot volume they produced in the 7-2 win at Edmonton, Dustin Wolf and a Flames defense already missing Huberdeau and Honzek up front will be tested early.

What To Watch

Toronto is chasing its fifth straight win and currently sits third in the Atlantic Division at 16 points, two behind Ottawa and three behind Boston. Calgary, last in the Pacific Division at eight points, is looking to extend its three-game winning streak and climb out of the division basement. Backlund’s day-to-day status with an upper-body injury bears watching given his listed return date falls on game day. Toronto’s deep list of forwards on injured reserve, including Tavares and Joshua, means the Maple Leafs will again lean on their top line to carry the offensive load in Calgary.
