Manchester United fined Lisandro Martínez after the defender apologized for a post-match outburst that followed a meeting with manager Michael Carrick, according to the BBC. The club’s response marks the first confirmed disciplinary step in a dispute that began with Martínez’s criticism of United’s hierarchy after Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League loss to Atlético Madrid.
Martínez had told reporters he “expected more” from director of football Jason Wilcox during the summer transfer window and said the squad was not strong enough “to be ready for this kind of night.” Those comments, made on what was a designated day off for players, prompted United’s bosses to discuss the matter on Wednesday, according to ESPN.
The Fine And Apology
The BBC reported that Martínez was fined by the club after apologizing for the outburst, with the punishment coming after he met with Carrick. The specific amount of the fine was not disclosed, and details of the meeting itself were not made public.
Martínez addressed the episode directly in a statement posted to Instagram. “I know that, first and foremost, it’s us, the players, who have to deliver, and I put myself at the front of that responsibility,” he wrote. He said he “spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted,” adding that his remarks about wanting more reflected “the ambition we must all have as part of this club” and were “standards we must all hold ourselves to, starting with me.”
What It Means For Martínez And The Club
The fine shows United moved quickly to address a player criticizing the club’s football operations department publicly, even as the 28-year-old defender walked back his comments. Martínez is out of contract at the end of the season with an option for United to extend by another year, adding context to a dispute that touches both his future and the club’s front office.
His comments also landed just months after Ruben Amorim was sacked as head coach in January following a breakdown in his relationship with Wilcox, a reminder that tension between the playing and football operations sides at Old Trafford is not new.
A Season Already Under Strain
Martínez’s outburst did not happen in isolation. Forward Amad Diallo also posted an expletive-laden message on social media after the Atlético defeat, calling the result a “disgrace,” according to FOX Sports. The incidents came during United’s worst start to a Premier League season in the competition’s history, with just six points from six games and only one league win, against promoted Ipswich. The club’s lone Champions League win came against Azerbaijani side Sabah.
United sits 13th in the table, 12 points behind leader Manchester City. Carrick acknowledged the frustration surrounding the club’s results. “I’m not happy with the amount of points we’ve had so far, for sure,” he said.
“I understand the reaction at times. It hurts a lot. It’s not nice to go through.
Sometimes you have to go through it.”
What’s Next
United has not announced further disciplinary action beyond the fine, and the sources did not specify whether additional steps are under consideration. The club’s response to its struggling Premier League campaign, which already includes a late draw against Tottenham, will continue to draw scrutiny as United looks to climb out of 13th place.
