Manchester United could pursue a significant reshaping of their backline next summer, according to INews reporting cited by Yahoo Sports. The report says club figures have acknowledged internally that defense should have been prioritized more heavily in the previous transfer window, and that a Man United defensive clearout is now being mapped into the club’s 2027 recruitment planning.

United have looked vulnerable too often this season, with the lack of clean sheets underlining structural issues across the defense. Recruitment resources were directed elsewhere in the summer, particularly into midfield, and the consequences have quickly become clear.

What Was Reported

Yahoo Sports reports that Manchester United may be willing to part with Lisandro Martinez if the defender wants to leave, with the thinking being that clearing his salary from the books would free up space for reinvestment elsewhere in defense. Martinez’s current deal gives the club control over an additional year it can choose to activate, and Sky Sports’ Paper Talk column separately reports that United could trigger that 12-month extension clause specifically to recoup a transfer fee as they prepare to rework the backline.

Left-back has emerged as one of the clearest priorities in the club’s 2027 recruitment outlook, according to the Yahoo Sports report. Luke Shaw’s contract is nearing its end, and any extension would reportedly require him to accept reduced terms from his current £200,000-a-week deal. United are expected to monitor his fitness through the congested schedule before deciding on his future.

By contrast, Harry Maguire is expected to have his contract option triggered, with the club valuing his leadership and the support he provides to younger defenders such as Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro.

Lewis Hall remains a player of firm interest after United missed out previously, with Newcastle’s valuation and reluctance to sell proving decisive. The latest reporting indicates United could return next summer, with confidence that Hall’s openness to the move has not faded. Hall brings Premier League familiarity, athleticism and long-term upside, all of which fit the profile Ineos have tried to establish. Adrien Truffert is another name in the frame, and the Bournemouth full-back is expected to attract wide interest if he becomes available, which likely means any move would be competitive and expensive.

Why It Would Matter

If Manchester United move on from Martinez and do not extend Shaw, the left side of the defense would need major reconstruction. Freeing Martinez’s salary is presented as a way to create financial room for reinvestment in targets like Hall and Truffert. The defensive overhaul is part of planning for the 2027 window rather than an announced policy.

What’s Next

Manchester United has not officially confirmed a defensive clearout. Shaw’s situation will be assessed as the season progresses based on his fitness. Any pursuit of Hall or Truffert will not materialize until next summer at the earliest.
