Logan Cooley scored three goals, including the tying marker with 25 seconds left in regulation, and Mikhail Sergachev won it in overtime as the Utah Mammoth beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Thursday at PPG Paints Arena.

Cooley’s third goal forced extra time after Pittsburgh had erased a two-goal deficit with a pair of third-period strikes. Ben Kindel finished with two points for the Penguins, who got two assists from Evgeni Malkin but fell to 5-6-2. Sergachev’s wrist shot 3:27 into overtime, set up by Barrett Hayton, sealed it for Utah, which improved to 9-5-0 and swept the two-game season series.

Takeaways From Mammoth’s Win Over Penguins

Cooley carries the offense

Cooley opened the scoring 4:40 into the first period on a wrist shot, then doubled Utah’s lead at 14:11 off helpers from Lawson Crouse and Andrew Peeke. His third goal, a tip-in off passes from Vincent Trocheck and Clayton Keller, came with the Mammoth net empty for an extra attacker and tied the game at 3-3 with 25 seconds remaining in the third. Cooley finished with three goals and three points in 18:36 of ice time.

Pittsburgh’s third-period push falls just short

Down 2-1 entering the final frame, the Penguins scored twice in a span of 4:36. Rickard Rakell tied it 2-2 at 10:59 off a Kaedan Korczak assist, and Kindel put Pittsburgh ahead 3-2 at 19:35 with Malkin and Egor Chinakhov drawing assists. The lead lasted 24 seconds before Cooley’s tying goal sent the game to overtime.

Special teams and possession battle

Neither team converted on its lone power-play chance, with both going 0-for-1. Utah won the shot battle in spirit despite a 34-34 tie by controlling faceoffs at 56.1% and out-hitting Pittsburgh 25-7. The Mammoth also blocked 20 shots to the Penguins’ 12, a sign of the defensive work that kept Pittsburgh from building on its third-period momentum before overtime.

Player Of The Game: Logan Cooley

Cooley posted a line of three goals, zero assists, five shots on goal and a plus-1 rating in 18:36 of ice time, going 1-for-1 on faceoffs. His hat trick accounted for all but one of Utah’s goals and included the tying score in the final minute of regulation.

What’s Next

The Mammoth, now 9-5-0, host the Seattle Kraken next. Utah sits second in the Central Division at 18 points, one behind Minnesota. Pittsburgh, at 5-6-2 and 12 points, remains in the bottom half of the Metropolitan Division.
