10 arrests, officer hurt at Liverpool vs. Man City match

Police confirmed 10 arrests and a serious facial injury to an officer following Liverpool’s match against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026. The officer was hurt during the arrest of a man on Anfield Road at around 6:35 p.m. local time, according to BBC Sport.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and is now recovering at home, according to ESPN. About 60,000 fans attended the match at Anfield, which Manchester City won 3-0, according to BBC Sport.

What Happened

Police documented 10 arrests tied to the policing operation surrounding the match. One man faces two counts of assaulting a constable in connection with the incident that left the officer with a serious facial injury on Anfield Road.

Five people were arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting. One person was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assault. Two people face affray charges, and one person was arrested on suspicion of throwing items onto the pitch.

The match marked Manchester City’s first game since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules, a verdict the club has appealed. Hundreds of fans gathered outside Anfield ahead of kickoff, and City’s team bus entered through a back entrance to avoid them. Inside the stadium, City players were met with banners, chants and jeering from the crowd.

Police Response

Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin addressed the tragedy chanting arrests directly. “Football fans who chant about tragedies cause huge distress to the loved ones of people who died and their behaviour has absolutely no place in football,” Hobin said.

Hobin also framed the arrests as a warning to other fans. “I hope the arrests today send a clear message and act as a deterrent to others. Anyone who engages in this abhorrent behaviour risks ending up in custody and getting a criminal record,” she said.

On the officer’s injury, Hobin expressed disappointment at the outcome of the operation. “The officers and stewards are there to protect the public and keep them safe, and it is extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty,” she said.

What’s Next

No court dates or further charging details have been released for those arrested. The injured officer is recovering at home following hospital treatment, and no update on a return to duty has been announced. The match result kept Manchester City atop the Premier League table with a perfect 6-0 start, in the club’s first outing since the financial rules verdict it continues to appeal, as detailed in Guardiola’s response to the guilty verdict. The match itself also drew attention for a contested red card, examined in the VAR review of Gravenberch’s dismissal.
