The NBA referees’ union confirmed that LaMelo Ball committed a traveling violation on a side-step three-pointer during Minnesota’s Wednesday night game against the Miami Heat, posting video evidence that the call was missed in real time. The admission came a day after Ball’s debut with the Timberwolves, in which he scored 21 points in a 131-106 win.

The union broke down the sequence frame by frame, writing on social media, “For everyone asking, ‘how is this legal?’ It’s not!” The post settled a debate that started the moment Ball’s shot dropped in the second quarter.

The Main Development

According to the referees’ union breakdown, Ball gathered the ball with his right foot already on the floor, which by rule permits two additional steps, left then right. Instead, the union said, “He gathers with his right foot on the floor and would be permitted two steps by rule (left-right). He takes four steps after gathering the ball and travels.”

That means Ball took two extra steps beyond what the rule allows before releasing his shot. The three-pointer broke a 39-39 tie in the second quarter, according to Fox Sports, though it did not end up deciding the outcome of Minnesota’s eventual blowout win.

What It Means

The confirmation adds Ball’s play to the growing list of missed calls that officiating bodies have acknowledged only after the fact, a pattern that keeps surfacing questions about in-game enforcement of traveling rules on perimeter moves. The union’s willingness to publicly dissect the footage shows transparency after the play, but it does not reverse the result or affect Minnesota’s final 131-106 margin over Miami.

Ball himself was unmoved by the ruling. He told ESPN after the game, when his own brother Lonzo Ball had flagged the travel, “He hatin’. He hatin’…

Even if I’m wrong, I’m right. That’s how it goes.” The exchange turned what might have been a routine officiating note into one of the more talked-about moments of his first night with Minnesota.

Context

Ball’s 21-point outing came in his Minnesota debut, a game the Timberwolves controlled from start to finish against the Heat. The traveling sequence happened well before the final buzzer and had no bearing on a result that was never seriously in doubt down the stretch.

Readers tracking Minnesota’s roster this season can find related coverage on Anthony Edwards’ defensive focus for the Timberwolves as the team builds around its new backcourt pairing.

What’s Next

No disciplinary action or formal review of the missed call has been announced by the NBA. The league has not said whether the incident will prompt any change to how traveling is officiated on similar perimeter moves going forward. Minnesota continues its early-season schedule with Ball now established in the starting lineup after his debut performance.
