Kucherov: Trade Request Wasn’t About Money

Kucherov said his Lightning trade request stems from poor communication and lack of respect, not money, as he addressed the situation Monday.

Nikita Kucherov said his trade request to the Tampa Bay Lightning stemmed from a breakdown in communication rather than a push for more money, addressing the request publicly for the first time on Monday. The 33-year-old forward said he told the team in the spring he would not re-sign once he became eligible for a new contract on July 1.

“It was never about the money for me,” Kucherov said. “It was more about poor communication and respect. Over the last four months, we only have had two conversations, and (general manager Julien BriseBois) in the end made it clear that I’m free to walk on July 1.”

The Trade Request And Lightning’s Response

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the trade request on Oct. 30. Kucherov confirmed Monday that he had informed his teammates of his decision before the news became public.

“They heard it from me first,” Kucherov said. “Those guys are my family, and this will never change.”

BriseBois responded with a statement saying the Lightning “unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita.”

What It Means For Tampa Bay

Kucherov is in the final year of an eight-year, $76 million contract ($9.5 million average annual value) signed July 10, 2018. He has been eligible to sign a new contract since July 1 and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. His current deal includes a 10-team trade list.

Despite the standoff, Kucherov said he intends to keep playing for Tampa Bay while the situation unfolds. “For now, I’m part of this team, and I will do anything I can to help my teammates win,” he said. When asked what the organization means to him, Kucherov said, “Everything.

I got drafted here, played for … This is my 14th year. (I won) a couple championships, and I’ve met a lot of great people. Everything. My kids grow up here.

I’m forever grateful for this organization.”

Season And Career Context

Kucherov, a second-round pick (No. 58) in the 2011 NHL Draft, became Tampa Bay’s all-time leading scorer on Oct. 24, passing Steven Stamkos with 1,137 points. He has since built that total to 1,142 points on 405 goals and 737 assists across 892 games with the Lightning, including 18 points in 13 games this season.

He has won the Stanley Cup twice (2020, 2021), the Hart Trophy twice (2019, 2026) and the Art Ross Trophy three times (2019, 2024, 2025). He has also topped 100 points in each of the last four seasons. Tampa Bay (8-3-2) holds the first wild card into the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

What’s Next

The Lightning host Detroit on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. BriseBois has stated the team does not intend to move Kucherov, but the situation could evolve before the March 1 trade deadline.
