Atlético Madrid captain Jorge “Koke” Resurrección missed Tuesday’s Champions League match against Manchester United after his mother, Ana Merodio Borja, died early that day in Madrid, according to Fox Sports. Atlético did not provide a cause of death.
The club observed a moment of silence before kickoff at the Metropolitano Stadium, authorized by UEFA, and players wore black armbands throughout the match. Koke’s brother, Borja Resurrección, who serves as an assistant coach for Atlético’s under-19 squad, was also absent from the match.
The Main Development
Koke’s absence came on a night that was set to mark his 750th appearance for Atlético Madrid, according to the Houston Chronicle. Johnny Cardoso started in his place in midfield as the club dealt with the loss of its captain’s mother just hours before facing United.
Atlético won the match 2-0. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in under a minute, then held up six fingers to reference Koke’s No. 6 jersey. Ademola Lookman added the second goal in the 79th minute, and Marcos Llorente lifted Koke’s jersey toward the crowd in tribute.
Barrios described the moment afterward. “Today was very important, not just for the team, but for Koke and Borja (Koke’s brother) and their whole family,” Barrios said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “It was a very tough day for them.
This victory is dedicated to them. The news was tough on everyone. I knew that if I scored I was going to do that gesture and it happened.”
What It Means
Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak spoke about the difficulty of taking the field under the circumstances. “Of course, today was a very difficult day for the whole team,” Oblak said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “I can only imagine how hard it has been for Koke and his family.
It was a tough day to play. In the end, it’s something so sad and significant that you don’t forget it just because you are on the field. Even though we won, I’m not thinking much about soccer, I’m thinking about Koke.”
U.S. midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who replaced Koke in the lineup, reflected the same sentiment. “We missed (Koke) today,” Cardoso said, according to the Houston Chronicle. “We know it’s a very difficult moment.
May God comfort his family during this moment. They know that we are here to support them.”
Atlético coach Diego Simeone acknowledged the emotional weight of the night while crediting the players’ performance. “The loss of a family member of a player as important as Koke obviously hurt, but the players played a great match,” Simeone said, per the Houston Chronicle.
Context
Barrios’ goal came 49 seconds into the match, the second-fastest in Atlético Madrid’s Champions League history. Only Conor Gallagher’s 28-second goal against Real Madrid in the 2025 round of 16 was faster, according to the Houston Chronicle.
What’s Next
Atlético has not announced funeral arrangements or a timeline for Koke’s return to the squad. The club advances in the Champions League league phase after the win over Manchester United.
