Knicks Outlook

New York has won two straight, including a 133-127 road win over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday in which Jalen Brunson scored 38 points, according to Total Apex Sports’s recap of that game. Brunson leads the Knicks at 25.8 points per game, while Karl-Anthony Towns is averaging 21.8 points and a team-high 13.8 rebounds. Towns scored 27 points in New York’s 111-97 win over Detroit on Oct. 28, according to Total Apex Sports.

The Knicks out-rebound opponents on the offensive glass by a wide margin, averaging 14.6 offensive boards per game compared to Philadelphia’s 9.0, but they also turn the ball over more (14.8 per game) than the 76ers force (12.6 committed). Guard Jose Alvarado is out with a left ankle sprain and has a return date of Nov. 4, continuing to sideline a rotation piece, as reported by Total Apex Sports. Brunson and Towns are projected to start, with Mikal Bridges and the Knicks’ backcourt depth tested further by Alvarado’s absence.

76ers Outlook

Philadelphia has won four of five games this season and enters Friday on a three-game winning streak, most recently beating the Indiana Pacers 114-109 on Oct. 28. Tyrese Maxey leads the team at 28.4 points per game to go with 4.6 assists and 1.8 steals, while Joel Embiid paces the 76ers on the boards at 10.0 rebounds per game. LeBron James is averaging a team-high 6.8 assists. Total Apex Sports has reported that Maxey said a healthy Embiid “changes everything” for Philadelphia’s ceiling, a dynamic the Sixers hope to showcase again Friday, according to Total Apex Sports.

Philadelphia’s defense ranks ahead of New York’s in most categories, forcing 9.8 steals per game to the Knicks’ 7.2 and blocking 5.6 shots per game compared to New York’s 4.4. The 76ers are dealing with several frontcourt absences: forward Jabari Walker (left knee soreness) and center Tacko Fall (left quadriceps strain) are both out, along with Dominick Barlow (back fracture) and Ariel Hukporti, who is out long-term following right Achilles surgery. Guard Jaylen Brown is listed as day-to-day with a left knee issue and has a return date of Oct. 30, meaning his status for tipoff remains a projection. Maxey and Embiid are expected to start alongside James.

Key Matchup

The clearest edge for New York lies on the offensive glass, where its 14.6 offensive rebounds per game nearly double Philadelphia’s 9.0 allowed in that column. With Walker, Fall, Barlow and Hukporti all sidelined for the 76ers, Philadelphia’s frontcourt depth behind Embiid is thin, and second-chance opportunities for Towns could be a factor if New York can control the glass. On the other end, Philadelphia’s defense has forced more turnovers per game (9.8 steals) than New York has committed on average, and the Knicks’ 14.8 turnovers per game give the 76ers a path to convert extra possessions behind Maxey, who is shooting efficiently enough to lead all scorers in the matchup at 28.4 points per game.

What To Watch

Philadelphia sits first in the Atlantic Division at 4-1, while New York is fourth at 2-3 and two games back in the standings. A Knicks win would move them within a game and a half of the division lead and extend their win streak to three, while a 76ers victory would give Philadelphia a season sweep of the early head-to-head series and keep them unbeaten at home through this stretch. Both teams are also building toward NBA Cup group standings, adding stakes to Friday’s result beyond the standard regular-season table.
