Knicks Contract Negotiations Pause: The New York Knicks announced Friday they are pausing contract extension negotiations with Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart and other eligible players until later in the season, shifting their focus to preparing for the 2026-27 campaign. The move affects at least four players and comes with a clear financial backdrop that includes a reported $77 million gap in Towns’ negotiations.

Knicks Contract Negotiations Pause: The Main Development

The Knicks confirmed the pause applies to extension talks with Towns, Hart, Deuce McBride and Tyler Kolek, all of whom are extension eligible this offseason. Towns faces what the team itself has called the most pressing situation among the group, according to CBS Sports.

The organization framed the decision as a matter of focus rather than a breakdown in talks. “As an organization, our entire focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and delivering another year for our fans to be proud of,” the Knicks said in a statement reported by CBS Sports. “As a result, we will not be negotiating contract extensions until later in the season and will remain solely focused on preparing for the start of the season.”

The team’s stated rationale, per CBS Sports, is to eliminate distractions during preparation for its title defense.

What It Means

New York’s last offer on the table was $200 million over four years, which sits $77 million below the maximum extension he could sign, according to CBS Sports. Towns is already locked in for $57.1 million in 2026-27 and holds a $61 million player option for 2027-28 that he could decline to reach free agency.

Towns said earlier in the week that he would accept less than a maximum deal to help keep the roster together but felt the Knicks’ offer undervalued him.

Hart and Kolek both carry team options for next season, while McBride is set to hit unrestricted free agency next summer if no extension is reached. Only expiring contracts can be extended after Oct. 19, meaning Towns would need to decline his 2027-28 option to sign a new long-term deal during the season, and Hart and Kolek’s options would need to be declined for in-season extensions to happen at all.

Context

The pause follows a summer in which the Knicks let center Mitchell Robinson depart for the Boston Celtics rather than risk crossing into the second apron, a threshold owner James Dolan has said the franchise will not cross. That same restraint now shapes how New York approaches Towns’ next deal.

Towns said the extension “don’t look good” before the pause was announced.

What’s Next

The Knicks have until June 30 to finalize any extension deals with eligible players. Until talks resume, Towns’ decision on his 2027-28 player option and the futures of Hart, McBride and Kolek remain unresolved as New York opens its regular season.
