Joey Porter Jr. trade: Major deal ends tense 2026 standoff
The Joey Porter Jr. trade is done: the Pittsburgh Steelers are sending the cornerback to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick, the teams agreed Wednesday night. Tom Pelissero and Jane Slater reported the deal, and NFL.com, ESPN and CBS Sports confirmed the compensation.
The Joey Porter Jr. trade ends a months-long standoff between Porter and the Steelers that kept him off the field for all three of Pittsburgh’s games this season. Porter had been listed with a back injury, but the dispute traced back to a failed contract extension.
The Joey Porter Jr. trade terms
Dallas sends Pittsburgh a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. Porter carries a $4.9 million cap hit for 2026, the final year of his rookie contract, according to Bleacher Report. Jordan Schultz reported the Cowboys do not plan to extend Porter immediately and will let him play out the season on his existing deal.
Porter turned down an extension offer worth slightly more than $27 million, according to CBS Sports. The cornerback market climbed this offseason after Christian Gonzalez signed a four-year, $135 million deal and Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million deal, and Pittsburgh chose not to chase a record-setting contract, per Yahoo Sports.
Why the Steelers moved on
General manager Omar Khan said Aug. 31 that the team does not deal with extensions during the season, and no agreement came together before Week 1. Porter had been on the PUP list since early August after aggravating a back injury, and he missed the first three games while listed as “not injury related/conditioning/back.” CBS Sports reported the team had cleared him medically before Week 2. Coach Mike McCarthy said in August the sides were at an “impasse.”
Rather than let the situation fester, Pittsburgh used the Joey Porter Jr. trade to collect draft compensation instead of risking a lost season from Porter. The Steelers now lean on Jalen Ramsey, Jamel Dean, Asante Samuel Jr. and Brandin Echols in a cornerback room already dealing with injuries; Ramsey (wrist) and Echols were both in question this week, according to Yahoo Sports.
Porter’s background
Pittsburgh took Porter with the 32nd overall pick in 2023, the first selection of the second round after the Miami Dolphins forfeited their first-rounder for tampering. The Penn State product and son of former Steelers Pro Bowler Joey Porter started 11 of 17 games as a rookie.
Over three seasons, Porter totaled 41 starts, 165 tackles, three interceptions and 31 passes defended while regularly drawing opponents’ top receivers. Last season he played 94% of Pittsburgh’s defensive snaps when available, finishing with 52 tackles, one sack, one interception and 14 passes defended. He ranked in the top five in the league in yards allowed per coverage snap, according to PFSN, as cited by Bleacher Report.
What the Joey Porter Jr. trade means for Dallas
The Cowboys enter Week 4 at 1-2 with a defense that ranks 30th in the NFL in total yards and has yet to record an interception, according to NFL.com. Porter joins a secondary missing cornerbacks Cobie Durant (hamstring) and Shavon Revel (knee/ankle), per the Cowboys’ official site, and he will pair with DaRon Bland under first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
The deal continues Dallas’ defensive retooling since trading Micah Parsons to the Packers before the 2025 season. Kenny Clark arrived in that trade, and the Cowboys have since added Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary and first-round rookies Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. It is also the third trade between the Cowboys and Steelers since May 2025, following deals involving George Pickens and Broderick Jones.
What’s next
The Steelers visit the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video, and Porter had already been ruled out of that game. After the Joey Porter Jr. trade, Pittsburgh’s secondary will have to adjust without him for good. For more on the matchup, read our Steelers vs. Browns preview. The Cowboys play Sunday at Houston.
