Seahawks sign Joe Mixon to practice squad

Joe Mixon signed with Seattle's practice squad after a Monday workout, joining the Seahawks' depleted running back room pending medical clearance.

The Seattle Seahawks are signing running back Joe Mixon to their practice squad pending completion of a medical exam. The move follows a Monday workout and gives Seattle a proven veteran ball carrier at a position thinned out by injuries.

Mixon, 30, last played in Week 18 of the 2024 season and sat out all of 2025 with a foot injury. The Houston Texans released him in March after the lost season.

The Terms

No contract length or financial terms have been reported. NFL.com described the move as the Seahawks “going through process” of signing Mixon to the practice squad, meaning the deal is not yet officially finalized. The signing follows a workout Mixon completed with Seattle on Monday.

Why It Happened: Joe Mixon Joins Seattle’s Depleted Backfield

The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks are 3-1 but down to bare bones at running back. Zach Charbonnet is not yet ready to return after tearing his ACL in January. His recovery window has opened, but it could still crowd out snaps for Mixon once Charbonnet is cleared. First-round rookie Jadarian Price landed on injured reserve with a chest injury.

That leaves Emanuel Wilson and George Holani as Seattle’s current lead backs. Wilson has carried the load with 53 carries, 190 rushing yards and a touchdown this season. Mixon will compete with both for snaps rather than step into a defined role.

Player Background

Mixon brings a resume few practice squad additions can match. In 2024 with Houston, he compiled 1,016 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 245 carries and earned a Pro Bowl selection in his only season with the Texans. He has now recorded five career 1,000-yard rushing seasons, including four with the Cincinnati Bengals.

For his eight-year career, Mixon has rushed for 7,429 yards, caught passes for 2,448 more and scored 74 total touchdowns. From 2021 through 2024, his 4,069 rushing yards ranked sixth in the NFL, and his 40 rushing touchdowns tied for fourth-most in that span.

Mixon’s past also includes legal trouble. He reached a plea deal on a misdemeanor assault charge tied to an incident caught on video during his freshman year at the University of Oklahoma. In 2023, Cincinnati police sought his arrest on an allegation that he pointed a firearm at a woman; he was found not guilty.

What’s Next

The Seahawks still must finalize Mixon’s medical exam before the signing becomes official. Seattle also recently added cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Trevon Diggs, continuing a run of veteran additions. The Seahawks host the NFC West-leading San Francisco 49ers (4-0) in Week 5.
