Joe Espada will interview with the Seattle Mariners regarding their managerial vacancy, according to MLB.com. The Astros granted Seattle permission to speak with Espada about the position.
What Was Reported
The Mariners relieved Dan Wilson of his duties at season’s end. Espada has spent nine years with the Astros, six as bench coach and the past three as manager, winning the 2022 World Series and earning AL West titles in both 2024 and 2026.
Espada’s contract with the Astros expires at the end of October.
Espada’s Status With The Astros
In three seasons as manager, Espada’s Astros went 256-229 with AL West titles in both 2024 and 2026.
The Astros were swept by the White Sox in the AL Wild Card Series last month. Houston has not made any official decisions regarding its general manager or manager positions.
Espada said after the playoff sweep that he would like to keep managing in Houston.
Why It Would Matter For The Mariners
During Espada’s nine years with the Astros, Houston won the 2022 World Series, captured two other American League pennants, won seven AL West titles and reached the postseason eight times.
The Mariners are seeking a manager from outside the organization and view the opening as one of the sport’s more coveted jobs, featuring a homegrown rotation and stars Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh.
What’s Next
No timeline has been announced for the interview. The Astros have not made official decisions on their manager or general manager positions.
