Vanderbilt quarterback Jared Curtis will not play Saturday at Georgia because of an injury, ending a pregame wait over his status. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the Jared Curtis injury decision before the 12:45 p.m. EDT kickoff on SEC Network.

Jared Curtis injury update and who starts

Vanderbilt has not disclosed the nature of the injury. Curtis was listed as questionable on the SEC availability report and had been considered a game-time decision. Coach Clark Lea said earlier in the week that Curtis had not been able to go full speed in practice.

Blaze Berlowitz, who started Vanderbilt’s first two games before Curtis took over, is expected to start in his place.

Curtis’s season so far

Curtis, a true freshman, has appeared in four games and completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 746 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions, according to On3. He also has rushed for 133 yards and two scores. Against Auburn last week, he went 22 of 33 for 199 yards with one interception and added 46 yards on the ground.

Curtis once committed to Georgia before flipping to Vanderbilt, adding a layer of familiarity to Saturday’s matchup. The Jared Curtis injury changes the quarterback matchup for Saturday.

What Georgia coach Kirby Smart said

Before the Jared Curtis injury was ruled on, Georgia coach Kirby Smart called him a “tremendous talent” who is better athletically than people give him credit for, according to Sports Illustrated.

Smart also pointed to Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who still scrambled against the Bulldogs despite the turnovers, and said Georgia had too many missed tackles. Georgia won that game 41-13.
