The Jalen Duren contract is done. The Detroit Pistons center agreed Thursday night to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed deal, ending a monthslong restricted free agency standoff, NBA.com reported.
The 22-year-old All-NBA third-team selection reached the agreement shortly before a deadline to accept a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer. That route would have made him an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.
Jalen Duren contract: the terms
The five-year deal keeps Duren in Detroit through the 2030-31 season, CBS Sports reported, and averages about $40 million a year. Because of his All-NBA selection, he was eligible for a maximum five-year, $287 million extension.
He settled for less after a rough postseason. Duren averaged 10.2 points as the top-seeded Pistons lost in the second round, and CBS Sports reported that the slump weakened his bargaining position.
The Pistons also moved on money. CBS Sports reported that Detroit raised its offer from the $180 million to $190 million range to $200 million. The team also dropped a clause that would have required monthly weigh-ins during the contract standoff.
What the Jalen Duren contract means for Detroit
The deal removes the biggest cloud over the Pistons’ preseason. Duren had stayed away from team activities while talks dragged on, including media day and the start of training camp.
Detroit won 60 games last season, and the Jalen Duren contract locks in its core. Ausar Thompson agreed in September to a five-year, $155 million extension. Cade Cunningham is signed to a five-year max extension he agreed to in 2024 that can reach $269 million.
“We know how much he means to us and how important he’ll be for us moving forward in the future,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said, according to NBA.com. “That’s our guy.”
Duren’s breakout season
Duren, the No. 13 overall pick in 2022, averaged career highs of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 65% last season. He made his first All-Star team and was named to the All-NBA third team. Over four seasons in Detroit, he has averaged 13.5 points per game, according to The Associated Press.
The Pistons had also been clear about their stance on his contract talks as far back as June.
What’s next
Duren was expected to take a physical Friday and begin practicing over the weekend. The Pistons open the 2026-27 season with their All-Star center under long-term contract, and the Jalen Duren contract answers their biggest offseason question.
