The Seattle Kraken announced Saturday that forward Jacob Melanson has been diagnosed with an anterior mediastinum hematoma with a vascular pseudo aneurysm, a condition that will keep him out indefinitely. The 23-year-old sustained an upper-body injury during Seattle’s 6-1 win at the Calgary Flames on Oct. 1, the team’s season opener, according to NHL.com.
Melanson played 9 minutes, 31 seconds against Calgary and recorded one shot on goal before the injury was diagnosed. The Kraken did not specify when the diagnosis was confirmed relative to the game, but the announcement came more than a week later, on Oct. 10.
Kraken Statement On Melanson’s Status
The Kraken listed Melanson as out indefinitely and did not attach a timetable to his return. In a statement, the team said, “Jacob will continue to be evaluated and monitored closely by the medical staff in Seattle through the healing process for a gradual progression to return to hockey.”
The club did not offer a target return date or a projected recovery window beyond that statement. No further designation, such as injured reserve or long-term injured reserve, was specified in the announcement.
Melanson’s Season And Career Numbers
Melanson was a limited but present contributor for Seattle last season, posting five points on two goals and three assists with 32 penalty minutes across 36 games. Over three NHL seasons, he has totaled five points in 38 career games. The Kraken selected him in the fifth round, No. 131 overall, of the 2021 NHL Draft.
What’s Next
The Kraken will continue to evaluate Melanson with no timetable for a return update.
