The Islanders had lost their season opener at Toronto on Wednesday. They answered with a lopsided win over a New Jersey team that had beaten Philadelphia in its opener.
Islanders vs Devils score: second period decides it
New York scored three times in the second period. Simon Holmstrom and Brayden Schenn scored 1:28 apart early in the period to make it 2-0. Bo Horvat then scored on the power play to cap the burst.
Matthew Schaefer had two assists on the night, according to the Associated Press. He is the youngest assistant captain in franchise history. Horvat was named the 16th captain in team history on Sept. 14.
Eklund gets his first NHL goal
Rookie forward Victor Eklund, the 16th overall pick in the 2025 draft, scored his first NHL goal in the third period. Cal Ritchie got the assist.
Ondrej Palat and Casey Cizikas, who scored short-handed, rounded out the scoring. Nico Daws made 26 saves for the Devils in the loss.

Sorokin’s shutout was a clean response to the opening-night defeat, which we covered in our recap of the Maple Leafs’ 2-1 win over the Islanders. New York’s next game is at the Rangers on Tuesday. New Jersey hosts Utah the same night.
