No. 14 Houston Cougars vs Utah Utes headlines a loaded Saturday night slate when the unbeaten Utes host the Cougars at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. Houston Cougars Vs Utah Utes Game Information

  • Date: Saturday, Oct. 24
  • Time: 10:15 p.m. ET
  • Venue: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
  • TV: ESPN
  • Weather: 52 degrees, 10% chance of precipitation

Why Does This Game Matter For The Big 12 Race

Utah is unbeaten and facing a ranked conference opponent, giving the Utes a chance to strengthen their College Football Playoff résumé before a Nov. 7 rivalry date with BYU. Houston, meanwhile, needs the win to stay in the Big 12 hunt behind No. 2 BYU and No. 8 Texas Tech. A Cougars victory would push Houston into third place in the conference and give the team the tiebreaker over Utah, according to Newsday.

The stakes extend beyond the standings. A Houston win would also spoil what was set up to be a celebration of the 100th consecutive sellout at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Newsday reported.

How Has Utah Looked Coming Off The Colorado Win

Utah survived a scare in its last outing, beating Colorado 27-24 after leading 13-0 at halftime before the Buffaloes scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter. Quarterback Devon Dampier threw three touchdown passes in that game, and a late defensive stop sealed the victory, according to Deseret News.

Dampier has completed 118 of 172 passes this season for 1,412 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. Running back Wayshawn Parker has carried the load on the ground with 597 yards and seven touchdowns on 89 attempts, while Braden Pegan leads the receiving corps with 32 catches for 422 yards and six scores. Utah has won five straight games since its season opener and has not lost in six tries.

What Does Houston Bring Into Salt Lake City

Houston’s only loss came at Texas Tech, 28-26, in the second week of the season. Since then, the Cougars have reeled off five straight wins, including a 35-32 decision over Oklahoma State last week. Quarterback Conner Weigman has completed 134 of 198 passes for 1,771 yards with 20 touchdowns against just two interceptions, giving Houston a passing touchdown percentage of 10.7% on the season.

Makhi Hughes paces the Houston rushing attack with 464 yards and three touchdowns on 98 carries, and Amare Thomas leads the receivers with 36 catches for 487 yards and six touchdowns. The Cougars have also converted 61.36% of their third downs, well above Utah’s 52.56% clip, and have forced seven takeaways against five giveaways for a plus-two turnover margin.

Key Matchup: Utah’s Defense Against Houston’s Efficient Offense

ESPN ranks Utah 12th nationally in total defense and ninth in total offense, while Houston sits 10th nationally in total offense. That sets up a collision between a Utah defense that has allowed opponents to move the ball at a below-average rate and a Houston attack that has been one of the most efficient in the country, converting better than 61% of its third downs and 80% of its fourth-down tries this season.

Utah’s offense has not been shy either, averaging 40.2 points per game compared to Houston’s 39.3. Both offenses have produced almost identical yardage totals, with Utah at 486.5 total yards per game and Houston at 485.1, making the matchup between Utah’s defense and Houston’s offense the clearest swing factor in the game.

By The Numbers

  • Total offense per game: Utah 486.5 yards, Houston 485.1 yards
  • Scoring offense: Utah 40.2 points, Houston 39.3 points
  • Passing yards per game: Utah 266.3, Houston 264.9
  • Rushing yards per game: Utah 220.2, Houston 220.3
  • Third-down conversion rate: Utah 52.56%, Houston 61.36%
  • Fourth-down conversion rate: Utah 50.00%, Houston 80.00%
  • Total takeaways: Utah 6, Houston 7
  • Total giveaways: Utah 6, Houston 5
  • Turnover differential: Utah 0, Houston +2
  • Sacks allowed per game: Utah 1.7, Houston 1.0

Players To Watch

Devon Dampier, Utah Quarterback

Dampier threw three touchdowns in the win over Colorado and has accounted for 15 passing scores this season against four interceptions. How he handles a Houston defense that has produced 13 sacks and 29 tackles for loss will shape Utah’s offensive output.

Conner Weigman, Houston Quarterback

Weigman has thrown 20 touchdown passes to just two interceptions this season, a ratio that ranks among the most efficient in the country. His ability to extend drives on third down, where Houston converts at a 61.36% clip, will be central to the Cougars’ chances on the road.

Wayshawn Parker, Utah Running Back

Parker has scored seven rushing touchdowns and is averaging better than six yards a carry. Utah will likely lean on him to control the clock against a Houston defense that has allowed 220.3 rushing yards per game to opposing offenses this season.

What To Watch

Beyond the Big 12 standings implications, the atmosphere figures to be a factor. The cheapest available ticket for the game carried a get-in price of $254 on TicketData.com as of this week, making it the most expensive matchup involving any team in the latest AP Top 25 poll, with that price climbing 12% in the three days before kickoff, according to Deseret News. Rice-Eccles Stadium is also set up for a celebration of its 100th consecutive sellout, a milestone Houston could disrupt with a road win.

With College GameDay on site and both teams unbeaten in conference play, the result carries weight for the Big 12 race and for Utah’s positioning heading into its Nov. 7 rivalry game against BYU.
