The Atlanta Falcons beat the San Francisco 49ers 29-20 on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Michael Penix Jr. throwing three touchdown passes and the Atlanta defense forcing four turnovers. The win moved the Falcons to 3-4 on the season, while San Francisco fell to 6-1.

Penix completed 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards without an interception, posting a 118.9 passer rating. The Falcons defense turned four 49ers giveaways, two interceptions and two lost fumbles, into the difference in a game San Francisco outgained 400 yards to 295. Brock Purdy threw for 288 yards and a touchdown for San Francisco but was intercepted twice, and running back Kaelon Black’s 63-yard rushing day on just 12 carries included a 30-yard touchdown run.

How The Falcons Pulled Away

San Francisco led 14-3 after Christian McCaffrey’s 1-yard touchdown run and Black’s 30-yard scoring run in the first half. Atlanta answered before halftime with a Nick Muse touchdown catch from Penix and a Nick Folk field goal as time expired, cutting the deficit to 14-12 at the break.

The Falcons took their first lead in the third quarter when Penix found Kyle Pitts Sr. for a 5-yard touchdown, making it 19-14. Atlanta then opened the fourth quarter with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Penix to Drake London, stretching the lead to 26-14. San Francisco answered with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Purdy to Kyle Juszczyk, but the two-point conversion attempt that would have been the PAT failed, leaving the score 26-20. Folk added a 31-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining to set the final margin at 29-20.

Top Performers

Penix finished 25 of 34 for 213 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. London led Atlanta’s receivers with seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Pitts added five catches for 22 yards and a score. Bijan Robinson carried 20 times for 63 yards and added five catches for 59 yards out of the backfield. Folk made all three of his field goal attempts, including kicks of 39, 33 and 31 yards, and finished with 11 points.

For San Francisco, Purdy completed 27 of 40 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown but was picked off twice, by Kendal Daniels and Jessie Bates III. George Kittle caught eight passes for 88 yards. McCaffrey had six catches for 61 yards to go with his rushing score, and Black added 63 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Fred Warner led all defenders with 13 tackles, and Daniels paced Atlanta’s defense with 11 tackles and an interception.

What It Means

Atlanta’s defense did its job despite a lopsided yardage disadvantage, turning four 49ers turnovers into points while the Falcons offense committed none. The Falcons improved to 3-4 and sit second in the NFC South at .429, behind Carolina’s 3-3 mark. San Francisco dropped to 6-1 but still leads the NFC West comfortably over Seattle, which is 3-3.

Atlanta’s offense struggled on third down, converting just 4 of 12 chances and 2 of 5 red-zone trips, but Penix’s efficiency through the air and zero giveaways offset those numbers. San Francisco’s own red-zone execution was perfect at 2-for-2, yet its four total turnovers proved costlier than any individual drive.

What’s Next

The 49ers return home next week; their schedule continues. The Falcons stay on the road for their next game.
