The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for minor league right-hander Juan Garcia, per SoxProspects.com. The trade came one day after Boston designated Rivera for assignment.

Rivera, 23, is a hard-throwing reliever who averages 95 mph on his fastball and pairs it with a slider, Sporting News reported. He stands 6-foot-7 and will turn 24 in June.

Terms Of The Eduardo Rivera Trade

St. Louis sent Garcia, an 18-year-old right-hander, to Boston to complete the deal, according to CBS Sports. Garcia spent the 2026 season in the Dominican Summer League, posting a 4.40 ERA with a 39:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 43 innings.

In return, the Cardinals get a pitcher with swing-and-miss stuff but a recent track record of control problems. Rivera struck out 30% of opponents he faced across 55 2/3 minor league innings in 2026, but he also walked 12.7% of batters at that level, per Sporting News.

Those issues were more pronounced in his brief big league look. Rivera appeared in four major league games, including three spot starts, and worked 10 innings. He allowed seven runs and walked 13.6% of the 44 batters he faced, numbers Sporting News reported as the reason Boston viewed his control as a significant concern before designating him for assignment.

Why The Move Makes Sense For St. Louis

Rivera still has two minor league options remaining, giving the Cardinals flexibility to option him between Triple-A and the majors as he works on his command. St. Louis can deploy him out of the bullpen, where his velocity and left-handed arm angle give him a role even as he refines his walk rate.

Garcia is 18 and has yet to pitch above the Dominican Summer League, making him a prospect Boston can develop long-term.

Rivera’s International And Minor League Track Record

Rivera threw 6 2/3 innings for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, allowing three runs on two hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. That outing showed the same swing-and-miss upside and control concerns that have defined his career.

What’s Next

Rivera has two minor league options remaining, giving the Cardinals flexibility to develop him in the minors before any potential call-up.
