Five-star wide receiver Easton Royal flipped his commitment from Texas to Florida on Sunday, ending an 11-month pledge to the Longhorns. The Easton Royal commitment flip lands six days before Texas hosts Florida in a Week 7 matchup at Darrell K Royal Stadium, according to CBS Sports.
Royal, a Brother Martin High School product from New Orleans, had been committed to Texas since Nov. 29 as the first member of the program’s 2027 class, according to ESPN. He is ranked the No. 8 overall prospect in ESPN’s SC Next ESPN 300 and the No. 14 player nationally with a No. 2 ranking among receivers by 247Sports.
The Main Development
Royal’s decision came one day after his latest visit with Florida during the Gators’ 38-19 loss to South Carolina on Saturday, per ESPN. Florida, LSU and Texas were the three schools that received an official visit from Royal, and multiple other SEC programs, including LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee, had expressed strong flip interest, according to ESPN.
Florida first-year head coach Jon Sumrall has a history with Royal that predates his arrival in Gainesville. Sumrall offered Royal while serving as Tulane’s head coach in March 2025, operating just seven miles from Royal’s high school. He resumed his pursuit after taking the Florida job late last year.
Royal credited that relationship directly. “I know [Sumrall] is a winner. He won at Tulane and took them to the College Football Playoff.
I know what he’s all about. He’s the type of coach I want to play for,” Royal said, according to ESPN.
What It Means
Royal also pointed to Florida’s staff structure and culture as factors in his decision. “It’s just way more energy in the air, completely different philosophy, energy in the building, their offense is completely different. It’s a lot of new things that they have to offer that makes this staff so great,” he said.
He elaborated further on the coaching staff’s approach to developing receivers. “[Florida’s] attention to detail and family vibe they give. They are probably one of the only schools that has five receiver coaches.
You might think that’s not good, but there are no egos, and every coach can provide something different to help you. I’m very familiar with coach (Jon) Sumrall. I took a visit to Tulane when he was there.
I know he’s a winning head coach,” Royal said.
The flip is a significant setback for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Chris Jackson, who had retained Royal’s pledge through the summer despite outside interest, according to ESPN. Texas’ 2027 class previously ranked No. 4 nationally before losing its headline receiver commitment.
Context And Background
Royal enters his senior season off a junior campaign that included 2,095 all-purpose yards and 29 total touchdowns, according to ESPN. He also ran a 10.17-second 100-meter dash that broke a 46-year-old Louisiana state record and won him a state championship. He is an Under Armour All-American and Louisiana’s No. 2 overall recruit who lines up outside, in the slot and in the backfield for Brother Martin, according to 247Sports, and is considered a willing blocker in the run game.
Florida began Saturday with 25 commitments and a No. 8 ranking in ESPN’s 2027 class rankings, while 247Sports had the class at No. 11 entering Sunday. Royal becomes the Gators’ 26th high school commitment of Sumrall’s first full recruiting cycle and their second five-star pledge, joining offensive tackle Maxwell Hiller, the No. 7 overall prospect in the class. Florida also holds a commitment from in-state quarterback Davin Davidson, ESPN’s No. 6-ranked pocket passer. If Royal signs in December, he would be Florida’s highest-ranked wide receiver addition since Percy Harvin in the 2006 class, according to ESPN.
Team Impact
The timing adds weight to Saturday’s on-field meeting between the two programs. Texas entered the week ranked No. 1 at 5-1 before an upset loss to Oklahoma, while Florida sits at 4-2 after an 0-2 skid following a 4-0 start under Sumrall. LSU, which Sports Illustrated reported was losing ground in the race for Royal just two days before the flip, remains among the programs that pursued him throughout the cycle.
What’s Next
Florida visits Texas at Darrell K Royal Stadium at noon ET Saturday on ABC, giving both staffs a chance to address the commitment shift in person. Royal is not eligible to sign a national letter of intent until December, leaving room for both programs to continue recruiting him before then.
