The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday, closing out the series 3-1 and sending the Dodgers to the NLCS for the third consecutive year.
Andy Pages delivered the decisive blow, lining a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning that drove in two runs. Max Muncy added insurance in the ninth with a solo home run off Raisel Iglesias, his 19th career postseason homer with the Dodgers and a new franchise record.
Dodgers NLCS: The Main Development
Tyler Glasnow started for Los Angeles in his first appearance since Sept. 24. He allowed just one hit over 4 2/3 innings, though he also walked five batters. The Braves finished the series with 18 walks and failed to turn any of them into a run, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The win marked the Dodgers’ eighth straight postseason series victory and extended their streak of consecutive playoff appearances to 14. Los Angeles enters the NLCS after winning 100 games in the regular season.
Shohei Ohtani reached the NLCS with the Dodgers for the third year in a row, according to Fox Sports.
What It Means
Los Angeles is now two series away from a third consecutive World Series title. USA Today columnist Gabe Lacques wrote that the Dodgers’ “greatness and flaws will be for all to see” as they move into the championship round.
Manager Dave Roberts told his team: “We understand that the job’s not done. We have eight more wins. Stay focused.
There’s no more talented team than the Los Angeles Dodgers. We’re smarter, we’re better and we’re tougher.”
Context
Atlanta entered the series with a roster already thinned from a difficult wild card round against Philadelphia, according to USA Today. The Braves could not overcome that attrition against a Dodgers team that has now won eight straight series dating back multiple postseasons.
What’s Next
The Dodgers will open the NLCS on Sunday against the winner of the Milwaukee Brewers-San Diego Padres series. Los Angeles is chasing its third straight World Series championship and will need eight more wins to get there.
