Division Series Rosters: NLDS, ALDS to test pitching depth in October

The rosters announced for Division Series play Saturday expose a fundamental tension in October baseball: teams must choose between immediate pitching firepower and the flexibility to navigate a longer series. How each contender solved that puzzle shapes the matchups and forecasts which teams will run out of arms before the series ends.

Bullpen games demand exhaustion calculus

The Atlanta Braves are leaning hard on the bullpen-game strategy that worked in their Wild Card win over Philadelphia. Dylan Dodd will open Game 1 against the Dodgers, but he is not the starter in any traditional sense, he is the opener in what amounts to a five-man relief appearance. The Braves added right-handers AJ Smith-Shawver and JR Ritchie and outfielder Lane Thomas to their postseason roster, bumping their pitcher count to 13.

The cost is steep. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Chris Sale came out of the bullpen in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series against Philadelphia to close the game. The Braves gambled their best arm for one win, and now they rebuild their pitching depth on the fly.

This is not accident. It is construction. Atlanta chose extra pitchers over extra position players, 13 pitchers to 12 hitters.

Lane Thomas, a right-handed bat just off the injured list, replaces two left-handed hitters to hedge against the Dodgers’ two-starter rotation of lefties Skubal and Blake Snell. The roster tells the story: the Braves are betting that seven games will not be played, and that if they survive the first two, their pitching committee can dig into the middle innings without running dry.

Experience over freshness: the Dodgers’ relief gamble

Los Angeles made its own high-wire choice. Josue De Paula, 21, joined the Dodgers’ NLDS roster, part of a bullpen that includes Edwin Diaz, a former closer with an 8.68 ERA in Dodger Blue who has thrown five scoreless innings in his last five appearances, and Kris Bubic, who has not allowed a run in five straight outings but has totaled only five outings in an L.A. uniform since the trade deadline.

The Dodgers excluded Justin Wrobleski, a 2025 playoff hero, and Jack Dreyer, opting for Diaz and Bubic. Both choices signal confidence in recent performance over larger sample size or proven postseason pedigree.

Matchup mismatch at the top: Skubal and Misiorowski set the bar

Tarik Skubal, the presumptive 2026 NL Cy Young Award winner, will start for the Dodgers against the Braves. The back-to-back AL Cy Young winner is making his first playoff start since the Dodgers traded for him in August, with a two-time defending World Series championship offense behind him.

Jacob Misiorowski, the Brewers’ 24-year-old ace, posted a 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts in 174 2/3 innings this year, marking his first postseason start. He will face San Diego’s Robbie Ray, 35, who posted a 5.02 ERA in nine starts with the Padres since being dealt to them at the trade deadline.

The Yankees’ absence: how Aaron Judge shapes the Rays matchup

According to ESPN, the Yankees left Aaron Judge off their ALDS roster against Tampa Bay. Drew Rasmussen, who posted a 1.81 ERA in 11 career appearances against New York, will start for the Rays. In his final regular-season start Sept. 22, Rasmussen struck out 11 over 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball against them.

Gerrit Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, will start for New York. Cole has not pitched in the postseason since the 2024 World Series. Rasmussen’s familiarity with the Yankees lineup gives Tampa Bay an advantage in Game 1, but Cole’s performance in his first playoff start in two years will determine whether that edge holds.

Youth versus burnout: the White Sox-Guardians pitcher duel

The White Sox will start Hagen Smith, a 23-year-old left-hander who threw three scoreless innings in his Wild Card start against Houston, the longest outing of his major league career. Chicago is signaling that Smith cannot go deep; the team will lean on relievers. That is not a statement about Smith’s talent; it is an acknowledgment of his early career development.

The Guardians counter with Parker Messick, 25, who posted a 2.56 ERA in 32 starts with 193 strikeouts in 186 1/3 innings this year. This is Messick’s playoff debut during a breakout campaign that could earn him AL Rookie of the Year consideration. He is far more proven than Smith at the big league level, yet he faces a White Sox squad that has already won a playoff series with their young reliever.

Smith’s limitations as a starter mean the entire series will hinge on the bullpen. The White Sox proved their relief corps works in October with a Wild Card Series victory.

How roster depth predicts series length

Teams with elite top starters, Skubal, Misiorowski, Cole and Rasmussen, have the luxury of trusting their Game 1 opener. Teams without that anchor, Atlanta, San Diego and Chicago, have loaded their bullpens and shortened their benches. The Dodgers split the difference, counting on recent bullpen performance to compensate.

The rosters reveal each front office’s bet on how long the series will go. Clubs that added relievers and cut position players are planning for a quick exit or a bullpen-heavy grind. The Dodgers’ selection of Diaz and Bubic over proven October arms like Wrobleski suggests confidence in recent trends over postseason pedigree.

If starters hold and relievers perform as expected, the favorites advance quickly. If either group stumbles, the rosters suddenly look thin.
