Disaster unfolds as Ohio State loses to Oregon. Any hope for the CFP is now over for the Ohio State Buckeyes with three losses; the road is tough, and the Buckeyes will need help. It is funny how one injury can change the fortunes of the team. The Buckeyes wore scarlet pants to go with their scarlet jerseys and encouraged fans attending the game to wear all scarlet. Most did.

Ohio Stadium looked good, but Ohio State lost to Oregon. Notably, Julian Sayin had his surgery and was no longer in a sling. He stalked the Buckeye sideline, encouraging players, mostly new starting quarterback Luke Fahey. The Buckeyes needed to win this game as their margin of error to make the College Football Playoff was negligible. Do you now think Ohio State will make the Playoff?

Disaster unfolds as Ohio State loses to Oregon in Ohio Stadium in a game that was likely a must-win for both teams. In essence, all of the remaining games for Ohio State, with two losses, are must-wins. The playoffs have started already for the Buckeyes; here is how this game played out. It is funny how one injury can change the fortunes of a team.

In the first quarter, Bo Jackson ran for 8- and 14-yard touchdowns for Ohio State, and they jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead. The team looked great, and quarterback Luke Fahey completed several difficult passes, indicating that he was growing more and more comfortable. That was good news for the Buckeyes, who needed him to be confident and assume the reins of the starting quarterback job. The game changed dramatically after that.

In the second quarter, Gage Hurych kicked a 33-yard field goal to get the Oregon Ducks on the board. The score was 14-3. Near the end of the quarter, Dierre Hill rushed for a 10-yard touchdown. With the successful point-after, the score was now 14-10. That entire drive was set up by a fake punt. Ohio State got the ball back with 1:25 left. There was some question about whether the Buckeyes would try to score, as they often did with quarterback Julian Sayin. Disaster unfolded as Ohio State lost to Oregon. Then, Jamari Johnson, the tight end, rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, and Oregon led 17-14 at the half.

The second half did not start off great for Ohio State. Dierre Hill Jr. ran for a 48-yard touchdown run. Immediately preceding that touchdown run was a roughing the passer penalty. The score was 24-14 Oregon. Then Darkorian Moore caught an 11-yard touchdown pass, and the score was 31-14. Ohio State is not equipped to come back from this deficit.

In the fourth quarter, Ohio State failed to convert a fourth down, giving Oregon the ball in Ohio State territory. After only a few plays, De’Juan Riggs ran for a 1-yard touchdown. With the extra point, the score was now 38-14. Ohio State was frustrated and just going through the motions at this point.

Then Jeremian Smith caught a 13-yard touchdown. It was 38-20, and Ohio State went for a two-point conversion. Luke Fahey ran the ball into the endzone. The score was now 38-22. Then, Gage Hurych kicked a 40-yard field goal. The score was now 41-22. Then Nate Roberts caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed. The score was now 41-28, which was the final score of the game; disaster unfolds as Ohio State lost to Oregon.

How One Injury Can Ruin a Team

The Ohio State season turned dramatically when Julian Sayin got hurt at Indiana. His replacement, Luke Fahey, has proved that he cannot play at this level, no matter how good he is in practice. He looks scared and is ineffective. It is tough for him when he is continually put in a bad spot, being behind by a large amount. There is no way he can bring his team back from a three- or four-score deficit in the fourth quarter.

At the moment of the injury, the Ohio State defense just stopped playing. In this game, they got Oregon in three-and-outs and one fourth-and-long. Oregon converted all of them. This was key to disaster unfolds as Ohio State lost to Oregon. That is not to mention the penalties. While there were a lot of them in the last game, in this game there were fewer, but they were quite untimely. The injury to Sayin seemingly has nothing to do with this, but the pall that came over the team affected everything.

Conclusion: Playing Out the String

Ohio State now has Northwestern, Nebraska, and rival Michigan. They will then get invited to some kind of meaningless bowl. This is an odd feeling for the Buckeyes and their fans, who are used to being in playoff contention. With three losses and an injured quarterback, they will not make the playoffs. One has to consider that Ryan Day’s job might be in jeopardy. Disaster Unfolds as Ohio State Loses to Oregon.
