Diary of a Yankees fan: The Yankees have become a laughingstock. As many know by now, the Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one. They did so with two former Yankees, Gary Sanchez and Jake Bauers, on their roster. Their manager, Pat Murphy, used Bauers as an example to take a veiled shot at the Yankees.
The Yankees are never far from the discussion, Diary of a Yankees fan, even when they do not win the World Series. The Brewers’ victory, with the lowest team salary in Major League Baseball, raises some serious questions as we head into a potential work stoppage. Most importantly, are the Yankees overpaying for their players?
Diary of a Yankees Fan

It is a little sad that the Brewers’ World Series victory was tainted by his manager’s controversial comments. He was not wrong, but the Yankees came up in their celebration. It seems the Yankees are an omni-present punchline. The team has become a joke. So, what did Pat Murphy say?
Pat Murphy
Diary of a Yankees fan, the fact that the organization has not won a World Series in 17 years, an organization length record. On the winners podium, Murphy said to Jake Bauers, “You’re going to be a rich f—er,” in an overjoyed yet expletive-filled post-World Series winning rant, according to ESPN. “Just remember when you were on that horses— Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself? Just remember, say, ‘This is the way we used to do it.'”
Murphy, 67, is an old school manager. He is well-respected. And, as the manager of the bargain basement Brewers, he touched a nerve. What he was saying is that the National League Championip Most Valueable Player, is about to get paid for his excellent performance. The Brewers would be happy to let the .200 hitter go. He can be replaced by the top farm system in the league.
Gary Sanchez
The Brewers win was made even worse by the fact that the team’s roster is comprised of two former Yankees. One is the aforementioned Bauers, who the Yankees let go with little fanfare. The other is Backup catcher Gary Sanchez. Sanchez is a one-time wonderkid in the Yankees’ farm system. He came up tp the team with cosiderable fanfare.
His prodigous power endeareds him to fans of the team. However, after a hot start, Sanchez petered out. He was traded by the Yankees to the Minnesota Twins on March 22, 2022. he was traded with Gio Urshela for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt. None of the players the Yankees acquired in that trade, diary of a Yankees fan, are still with the team.
Jake Bauers
Jake Bauers is another former Yankee who now has a World Series ring before Aaron Judge. Bauers played for the Yankees for only one season, in 2023. Then on Nov. 17, 2023 he was traded by the New York Yankees to the Milwaukee Brewers for Jace Avina and Brian Sanchez. Those players were both in the minor leagues at the time. They are still playing in the minorsv and neither is close to the major leagues, diary of a Yankees fan.
Conclusion: Do you get what you pay for?
One has to question what the Yankees, and other high-payroll teams (like the Mets and the Dodgers) are doing. They are paying a lot for players that did not win the World Series. They buy experienced veterans and the Brewers just proved a team can win with youngsters. Those player are cheaper, and somewhat less likely to get hurt. That is probably the way to go, and winning with two former Yankees, diary of a Yankees fan, and then poking the giant, is the way to go.
