Diary of a Yankees fan: The World Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays started last night. The Brewers won 3-2. All Yankees fans are rooting for the Brewers in this series the Yankees are not in. It just does not seem like the World Series, or October baseball, without the Yankees.
Diary of a Yankees fan: there are three pieces of news coming out of the Bronx. First, slugger Giancarlo Stanton will be back in 2027; how does he fit in? Second, Brian Cashman is celebrating an anniversary with the team. Third, Cody Bellinger won a fielding award; he is a great fielder. Do you think we will continue to get news out of the Bronx?
Diary of a Yankees Fan #15

Diary of a Yankees fan: the Yankees are not in the 2026 World Series. There is a silver lining: we do not have to stay up to watch the games. That is why DVRs were invented. At the same time, there are three pieces of news coming out of the Bronx. Plenty to write about. Here they are.
Giancarlo Stanton
Yankees manager Aaron Boone says the team will see how the slugger looks in the spring. However, right now he says Stanton is healthy. Presumably, if he plays for the team in 2027, and there is a season, diary of a Yankees fan, he will be the designated hitter. This is because Stanton cannot play the field and should not run. There is also a glut at designated hitter for the Yankees.
Aaron Judge is getting healthier and probably should not play the field; that is, he should be the designated hitter. Ben Rice got 482 at-bats, to great success, at designated hitter in 2025. Maybe he will end up at first base. Luis Garcia Jr. will likely slide over to second base with Jazz Chisholm Jr. leaving. But where do you play Anthony Volpe?
Brian Cashman: 30 Years as General Manager
Resolving this logjam, diary of a Yankees fan, is the job of general manager Brian Cashman. This will be his 30th season as the general manager of the Yankees. The team brought him back to the ire of Yankees fans. As is well known, he has not won a World Series since 2009. This is a 17-year drought, diary of a Yankees fan, the longest in franchise history. There is an argument to be made, after seeing his poor performance at the 2026 trade deadline, that he has seen his best days.
The Yankees are likely to ‘run it back’ again in 2027. Not only is Cashman coming back for his thirtieth season as general manager, but Aaron Boone is coming back as the team’s manager. With the exception af a few free agents, most notably Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr., many of the players will be back. Diary of a Yankees fan, we can predict now. If there is a 2027 season, the team will win 90-95 games, make the playoffs, and not win the World Series.
Cody Bellinger is a Good Fielder
Cody Bellinger was the only Yankee to win the Fielding Bible Award in left field. It was his third such award. Bellinger is a gifted fielder on a team that struggles defensively. He can play muliple positions and is a versatile godsend for Manager Aaron Boone. When he got hurt in the 2026 season, the team was in dire straits, as their record showed. It is good to see him recognized. He stands out on this team.
Conclusion: Lonely October
With the Brewers and Rays in the World Series, it is a sad and lonely October for Yankees fans. They are getting used to, unfortunately, not having to watch games late into the night for most of the fall month. Fans should worry about Brian Cashman coming back for his 30th season as general manager of the team. It seems the team that failed to reach its goal in 2026 will also fail when they next play baseball.
