The Boston Celtics converted guard Devin Carter to a two-way contract, the team announced Sunday. The move gives Boston flexibility with Carter’s roster spot while he works to carve out a role on a crowded depth chart.
Carter, 24, spent his first two NBA seasons with Sacramento after the Kings selected him 13th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Providence.
Terms Of The Devin Carter Two-Way Contract
The specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Two-way contracts allow players to split time between the NBA roster and the G League affiliate, and the conversion signals Boston wants Carter in that dual-assignment setup rather than on a standard NBA deal for now.
What It Means For Boston’s Roster
The conversion came alongside other roster moves. Boston waived forwards Tucker DeVries and Gabe McGlothan along with guards Hayden Gray and Milos Uzan, according to NBA.com. Those cuts cleared space as the Celtics finalized their opening-season roster structure.
The two-way setup gives Carter a runway to develop without forcing an immediate decision on a full roster spot.
Carter’s Career Numbers And College Background
Carter appeared in 38 games with 12 starts for Sacramento during the 2025-26 season, averaging 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes, according to NBA.com. Across his two NBA seasons, he has played in 74 total games with 12 starts, averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes.
His most notable NBA moment came on March 10, when he scored 24 points, including 22 on 8-of-11 shooting in the fourth quarter alone, in a win over Indiana. That outburst made him one of seven players in the league last season to score at least 22 points in a single fourth quarter.
Carter has also shown scoring upside in the G League, averaging 24.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.0 block over 10 career games there, nine of them starts, in 33.6 minutes per outing.
Before turning pro, Carter played one season at South Carolina in 2021-22 and two seasons at Providence from 2022-24. In his final college season with the Friars, he averaged career highs of 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists across 33 starts, earning BIG EAST Player of the Year honors in 2024. He is the son of Anthony Carter, who played 13 seasons in the NBA.
What’s Next For Carter And The Celtics
Boston has not detailed how it plans to split Carter’s time between the NBA roster and the G League under the two-way arrangement. His next opportunity to build on his role will come as the Celtics open their regular-season schedule and continue shaping their rotation following the recent wave of roster cuts.
