The Colorado quarterback change could shape the Buffaloes’ season. Deion Sanders benched starter Julian Lewis at halftime of a 23-13 loss to Baylor and sent in Isaac Wilson for the second half.
Colorado trailed 10-3 at the break. Under offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, the Buffaloes average 21.5 points per game, the lowest total in the Big 12, according to the Associated Press.
Colorado quarterback change: what happened against Baylor
Lewis led the offense to only three points in seven first-half possessions and had 75 passing yards at halftime, per CBS Sports. Wilson finished 12-of-25 for 156 yards and a touchdown, according to the Deseret News.
His 17-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Williams tied the game at 13-13 in the fourth quarter. Baylor then pulled away.
Sanders did not pin the loss on one player. He said the team needs better play at several positions, not only quarterback.
Experience against upside
Wilson, a transfer from Utah, has played in college games before. Lewis arrived as a highly touted recruit, and our earlier Julian Lewis story has more on his rise.
The Buffaloes are 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play. Sanders has said he wants a quarterback with confidence, a firm grasp of the offense and the trust of teammates in the huddle.
What’s next for Colorado
No. 12 Texas Tech (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) visits Boulder on Saturday night. ESPN reported, citing sources, that Wilson is expected to start, though Sanders said earlier in the week that the choice would be made after practice.
