Cole Caufield put Montreal up 1-0 at 3:49 of the first period. Malkin tied it on the power play at 14:07.
The second period belonged to Pittsburgh. Declan Carlile scored 32 seconds in, Sam Girard made it 3-1 at 7:59, and Novak added a goal at 14:01. Ben Kindel scored on the power play at 15:32 to make it 5-1. Nick Suzuki got one back for the Canadiens at 18:46.
Montreal’s third-period rally
Caufield scored again at 3:31 of the third to make it 5-3. Then the Canadiens pulled goalie Jakub Dobes for an extra attacker. Chris Kreider scored at 18:52, and Ivan Demidov tied it at 19:16 with 44 seconds left in regulation.
Suzuki finished with a goal and three assists. Lane Hutson added three assists, and Dobes made 24 saves on 30 shots. Caufield had two goals.
Milestones for Pittsburgh
Arturs Silovs stopped 20 of 25 shots for the Penguins. Malkin finished with a goal and two assists, and Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang each had two assists.
Malkin’s night also moved him past Dale Hawerchuk for 22nd on the NHL’s career points list with 1,411, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby picked up his 1,109th career assist, which ties Joe Thornton for seventh all time, per NHL.com.
