Cole Caufield scored 30 seconds into overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens past the Utah Mammoth 5-4 on Thursday night at Bell Centre, capping a comeback from a two-goal deficit. Nick Suzuki set up the winner and finished with three points to lead Montreal, which improved to 10-3-3.
Montreal trailed 4-3 before Adam Engstrom tied it with 5:06 left in regulation, forcing overtime. Logan Cooley scored three times for Utah and finished with four points, but the Mammoth fell to 10-6-1 with the extra-time loss.
Takeaways From Canadiens’ Win Over Mammoth
Montreal erased multiple deficits
The Canadiens trailed twice, falling behind 2-0 in the first period and again 4-3 in the third. Arber Xhekaj tied it at 2-2 late in the opening frame, and Kirby Dach knotted it at 3-3 just 1:09 into the third before Engstrom’s tying goal set up the extra session.
Logan Cooley carried Utah’s offense almost single-handedly
Cooley scored on a backhand, a snap shot and another snap shot, and he added an assist on Nick Schmaltz’s go-ahead goal in the third period. His four-point night accounted for more than a third of Utah’s offensive production, and he finished at minus-1 despite the output.
Montreal dominated shots and faceoffs despite the tight score
The Canadiens outshot Utah 35-20 and won 57.1% of faceoffs compared to 42.9% for the Mammoth. Montreal also converted just once on four power plays while Utah scored three times on five chances, a special-teams gap that kept the Mammoth in the game despite being outplayed at even strength.

Suzuki finished with a goal, two assists and three points, including the primary assist on Caufield’s overtime winner. His tying goal late in the first period, a snap shot assisted by Juraj Slafkovsky and Noah Dobson, started Montreal’s response to Utah’s early 2-0 lead.
