The Caleb Wilson debut arrived Wednesday night as the Chicago Bulls opened their season with the No. 4 overall pick already carrying some of the loftiest expectations of any rookie in the league. NBA general managers picked Wilson second in Rookie of the Year voting at 20%, behind only Cameron Boozer of Memphis at 50%, according to Yahoo Sports. His betting odds to win the award jumped from +1000 in June to +340 as of Oct. 19, trailing only Boozer at +270, according to FOX Sports. The question now is whether the early returns, four preseason games of uneven shooting paired with a dominant college résumé, match the noise around him.

Preseason Numbers Show Promise And A Clear Weakness

Wilson averaged 15.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game across four preseason contests, with 4.5 free-throw attempts per game and a 51.7% true shooting percentage, according to Yahoo Sports. He shot below 30% from 3-point range in that stretch. The ability to draw contact and get to the line at that rate points to the explosiveness NBA evaluators flagged as a separator, along with how quickly he moves off ball screens, per Yahoo Sports.

The 3-point number is the clearest early flag. A true shooting percentage in the low 50s over a small sample is not alarming on its own, but it will need to climb if Wilson is going to operate as a primary scoring option the way GMs expect.

College Production Explains The GM Confidence

The preseason sample is tiny next to what Wilson did at North Carolina. As a freshman, he averaged 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks in 31.2 minutes per game, shooting 57.8% from the field and 61% on 2-pointers, according to FOX Sports. His 63.7% true shooting percentage and 59.0% effective field-goal percentage in college ranked him second in the ACC in rebounding, third in double-doubles with 11 and fourth in scoring.

That efficiency, built largely inside the arc, is the foundation for the GM optimism. It also explains why the preseason 3-point slump has not dented his odds. Evaluators are betting on the full package translating, not a jump shot that was never his primary weapon in college.

Why Wilson Edges The No. 1 Pick In Rookie Of The Year Odds

GMs tied Wilson with AJ Dybantsa at 33% when asked which rookie will be the best player in five years, but they still favor Wilson for this season’s award, according to Yahoo Sports. The reasoning comes down to role. Wilson is set up as an unquestioned top scoring option in Chicago, while Dybantsa shares offensive usage in Utah with Anthony Davis and Trae Young.

Rookie of the Year voting rewards usage and counting stats as much as long-term upside, and Wilson’s path to touches is more direct. The depth of this draft class reinforces how unusual that distinction is. FOX Sports noted the 2026 class is considered one of the best in years, with even the No. 1 overall pick carrying only the fourth-best Rookie of the Year odds entering the season.

The Counterpoint: Hype Has Outpaced A Small Sample

The strongest case against treating Wilson as a finished product is that almost everything driving the buzz, the GM poll, the betting market shift, the city’s embrace, predates meaningful NBA minutes. Four preseason games is not enough to know whether the 3-point shot stabilizes or whether a 51.7% true shooting mark against NBA length is a blip or a trend. BetMGM reported that 43% of money wagered on the Rookie of the Year market is already on Wilson, a bet largely built on college tape and a favorable role rather than NBA results.

Bulls coach Tiago Splitter has been candid about the gap between hype and readiness, saying before Wilson’s debut, “Caleb has a ton of things on his mind right now, first NBA game, how we play on offense, how we play on defense. There’s a lot of things going on. And sometimes you’ve got to relax a little bit and just go out there and hoop.

Slowly, he’s going to get those things better, but I just want to see him enjoying and competing,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

Wilson’s Own Approach To The Pressure

Wilson has not avoided the attention building around him. On his first day in Chicago, a team photographer captured him in the United Center atrium looking up at the Michael Jordan statue, and he later posted a photo to his Instagram story captioned “One goal,” according to the Chicago Tribune. Chicago has gone roughly a decade without a homegrown star, which adds weight to a lottery pick’s debut in a city still measured against the Jordan era.

Wilson said he is ready for it: “I feel like I prepared for the moment. It’s time to get out there and show what I can do,” he told the Chicago Tribune. On managing expectations, he added, “You’ve got to give yourself grace.

I don’t know what the timetable is on me being an All-Star or all that stuff, but I feel like every day I’ll come out and be better than I was the day before. I feel like I’ve grown so much as a player just in the past week, so there’s no telling what I’ll look like come January.” The Chicago Tribune reported Wilson uses visualization and positive self-talk, including watching his own highlights before games, to handle the pressure.

What To Watch Next

The 3-point percentage is the single clearest number to track as Wilson’s regular-season minutes accumulate past the four-game preseason sample. His free-throw rate, which already sat at 4.5 attempts per game in the preseason, is a strong early sign that his scoring efficiency will hold up even if the jumper lags. For now, the gap between Wilson’s betting market standing and his actual NBA minutes is the story to follow as Chicago’s season unfolds.
