Boston Celtics Derrick White and Baylor Scheierman Attend Colorado Game

Derrick White

Two Boston Celtics and Colorado natives, Derrick White and Baylor Scheierman, were in attendance for the recent Colorado vs. Nebraska football game. Derrick White played at Colorado his senior year, averaging 18.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, as well as 1.2 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. Before that, White spent three years playing at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in Division II. Meanwhile, Baylor Scheierman went to Creighton University in Nebraska, but grew up in Aurora, Colorado. Both Celtics players were brought onto the field in Lincoln and saw Nebraska defeat Colorado 28-10.

White and Scheierman’s Time Together

Derrick White also attended Colorado’s game last week in which they defeated North Dakota State University at home. This week, he was there to support his alma mater again. White has been enjoying his time in the offseason, and Colorado has welcomed him back with open arms. At both games, Derrick White was welcomed onto the field, embraced by the fans, and apparently had a grand time in the last month of the NBA offseason.

Baylor Scheierman was right there with Derrick White on the field for the game. Scheierman has roots in both Colorado and Nebraska, growing up in Aurora and attending Creighton University. But his attendance with Boston Celtics teammate Derrick White is an interesting situation. It’s always a good thing to see teammates bonding and spending time together off the court. It’s especially good considering that Baylor Scheierman is a rookie, drafted only this past April, and already spending time with his teammates before his first NBA season has even started.

Scheierman’s role on the Boston Celtics is still unknown. Some recent Boston rookies have barely played, like Romeo Langford and Aaron Nesmith. Then there are others like Payton Pritchard, Robert Williams, and Grant Williams who found roles to contribute to the team. But, building team chemistry can never hurt, especially when that teammate is an NBA veteran and a Boston darling like Derrick White.

What This Means for Boston Celtics

For the Boston Celtics, two players attending a football game in the offseason may not matter in the grand scheme of things. But, with Baylor Scheierman’s role on the Celtics still up for debate, it’s intriguing to see him spending time with Derrick White. Last week, a report from Shams Charania stated that the Celtics may waive new singing Lonnie Walker IV after training camp. If this were to happen, it could lead to more playing time for Scheierman in his rookie season. And if he were to get significant playing time during his rookie season, already having a certain chemistry with his teammates could go a long way.

During his final season at Creighton, Baylor Scheierman shot 38.1% from three. If he can maintain similar shooting efficiency in the NBA, then the minutes will come. But he will be competing with Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Lonnie Walker IV, all proven NBA role players that can effectively shoot the three.

Derrick White, on the other hand, is secure in his role on the Celtics. As a regular starter and key contributor on both ends of the court, White is beloved by the fanbases in Boston and Colorado. Building camaraderie with his rookie teammate and fellow Colorado native in Scheierman is a good development for the Celtics as they head towards the new season.

Final Thoughts

The game against Nebraska may not have gone as planned for Derrick White’ s alma mater. However, for fans of the Boston Celtics, it’s encouraging to see their players together while having fun in the offseason. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come for White, Scheierman, and the Boston Celtics, and they can take that chemistry directly to the basketball court.
