DALLAS – The Blues beat Stars 4-0 in the season opener for both teams Friday night, with Mason McTavish scoring 94 seconds into his Blues debut. Joel Hofer stopped all 25 shots for his ninth career shutout.
Dalibor Dvorsky added a second-period goal, and Jimmy Snuggerud and Pius Suter scored empty-net goals 15 seconds apart late in the third period. Jake Oettinger made 20 saves for Dallas.
How the Blues beat Stars in Dallas
McTavish, acquired from the Anaheim Ducks for the Nos. 15 and 29 picks in the 2026 draft, cashed in right away. His goal at 1:34 of the first period was the fifth-fastest goal to open a season in Blues history, according to The Associated Press.
Dvorsky made it 2-0 at 13:05 of the second period, scoring into an open net after Oettinger lost his footing. Snuggerud and Suter then sealed it at 17:37 and 17:52 of the third, according to NHL.com.
Hofer, Blues penalty kill hold Dallas off
Hofer, making his first season-opening start in the NHL, had six shutouts last season. The Blues also killed all four Dallas power plays and blocked 12 shots.
Early in the third period, Adam Jiricek had a power-play goal erased after Dallas challenged for offside.
Injuries and a Seguin return
Blues defenseman Brandon Carlo drew a kneeing major and a game misconduct early in the third period after a hit on Roope Hintz. Hintz, playing his first game since March 6, grabbed his left knee but returned minutes later.
St. Louis forward Alexey Toropchenko left in the second period with an apparent right shoulder injury. Tyler Seguin played his first game since tearing his right ACL last Dec. 2, finishing with a minus-2 rating and six penalty minutes in 14:55 of ice time.
What’s next
Dallas’ loss ended a six-game winning streak. It was the Stars’ first season-opening loss since 2019, and the first time they were shut out in a home opener since moving to Dallas in 1993.
Both teams play again Saturday. St. Louis visits Colorado in a Blues vs. Avalanche matchup, while Dallas visits Nashville, as we outlined in our Stars vs. Predators preview. McTavish signed a six-year extension with Anaheim in 2025 before the trade.
