Takeaways From Bears’ Win Over Patriots
Santos delivers the dagger
With Chicago clinging to a 27-21 lead in the fourth quarter, Santos connected from 58 yards out with 1:34 remaining to push the margin to 30-21. The kick proved decisive after Andy Borregales answered with a 47-yard field goal for New England with 37 seconds left, pulling the Patriots within six but leaving too little time for a comeback.
Chicago’s offense moved the chains without turning it over
The Bears ran 66 plays to New England’s 50 and finished with zero turnovers, converting two of two fourth-down attempts and three of four red-zone chances. Caleb Williams completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, spreading the ball to five different receivers.
New England’s defense couldn’t finish drives
The Patriots allowed 21 first downs and 405 total yards while converting just two of seven third downs on offense. Chicago’s defense recorded an interception from D’Marco Jackson and the Bears capitalized with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Colston Loveland on the ensuing possession in the third quarter.
Player Of The Game: Luther Burden III
Burden caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, averaging 32.5 yards per reception. His 24-yard touchdown catch from Williams with 14 seconds left in the first half gave Chicago a 20-7 lead heading into the break, the biggest swing of the game before New England’s late comeback bid.
Bears Vs Patriots By The Numbers
Chicago out-gained New England 405 yards to 380 despite needing 16 more plays to do it, a reflection of the Patriots’ 9.4 yards-per-pass efficiency through the air. The Bears dominated on the ground, rushing for 116 yards on 30 carries compared to just 70 yards on 17 carries for New England. Chicago also won the turnover battle outright, finishing with zero giveaways against New England’s one interception thrown by Maye.
The Patriots were flagged 10 times for 71 yards, one penalty more than Chicago’s nine for 69 yards. Attendance at Soldier Field was announced at 60,520.
What It Means
The win keeps Chicago in second place in the NFC North at 5-2, one game behind unbeaten Minnesota (5-0) and ahead of Green Bay (4-2) and Detroit (3-2). New England dropped to 4-3 and sits second in the AFC East behind Buffalo, which improved to 5-1.
