Ashton Daniels ran for five touchdowns, a Florida State quarterback record, as the Seminoles dominated Virginia 38-7 on Saturday. Daniels’ record-breaking rushing performance gave Florida State (3-2, 1-1 ACC) its first Power Four victory of the season and showed the dual-threat dimension of an offense that struggled through much of September.

Daniels carried 17 times for 136 yards while completing 12 of 19 passes for 183 yards with an interception, according to CBS Sports. The dominant performance marked the clearest evidence yet that Florida State’s preparation could translate to game day.

Ashton Daniels’ Record-Breaking Game

Before Saturday, Daniels had rushed for four touchdowns through four games, one in each contest. His five-TD showing against Virginia doubled that total in a single outing.

Entering Saturday, Daniels had dealt with turnover problems: a 6-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio through four games. The Virginia contest featured a cleaner outing with one interception on 19 attempts, according to Yahoo Sports. Coach Mike Norvell had emphasized the need for that kind of execution.

Running back Ousmane Kromah also contributed, carrying 17 times for 80 yards. Kromah has rushed for 80 or more yards in all five of Florida State’s games this season, providing consistency in an offense that started the year with three consecutive punts before finding rhythm.

Dominant Defense Sets the Tone

The offensive explosion came alongside a dominant defensive performance. Florida State recorded 10 sacks, more than it had in the first four games combined, and limited Virginia to 37 rushing yards on 40 carries. The Cavaliers managed just 205 total offensive yards and punted seven times. Defensive end Rylan Kennedy led with two sacks, while linebacker Chris Jones added 1.5.

rushing success against Virginia hinted at a strategy shift. Florida State scored 30 or more points in four of five games, but Saturday’s 38-7 margin of victory was the clearest dominant performance yet, built partly on a ground game that moved the offense when passing options were limited.

Daniels’ versatility, the ability to gain yards on the ground when needed and throw from multiple arm angles, creates matchup problems that a defense built on stopping the pass, as Virginia’s was, must account for.

Virginia entered the game limiting opponents to 130.3 passing yards per game, the fifth-fewest in the country, but the Cavaliers had no answer for Daniels running the ball.

The offensive output came alongside a dominant defensive performance. Florida State recorded 10 sacks, more than adding to its total of seven through the first four games. That defensive pressure, combined with Daniels’ production, established the kind of complete game the Seminoles had sought. Virginia gained just 37 yards on 40 carries and 205 total offensive yards.

What It Means

Daniels had been averaging 232 passing yards per game with 9.6 yards per attempt through four games. Running back Ousmane Kromah noted before Saturday that Daniels had shown greater confidence and leadership in practice that week.

Virginia’s defense, one of the nation’s best in coverage, had held opposing quarterbacks to a 47.6% completion rate with just two touchdown passes and six interceptions entering Saturday. That scheme could not account for a quarterback capable of extending plays with his feet. Duce Robinson led the Seminoles with 262 receiving yards, averaging 20.2 yards per catch, while Jayvan Boggs had 240 yards on 12 receptions.

What’s Next

Florida State travels to Louisville on Friday. Virginia hosts Syracuse on Saturday. The Seminoles enter a stretch of seven consecutive ACC games, with the dominant Virginia performance a potential turning point after a slow start to the season.
