Lille is considering legal action over a tackle that ruptured defender Tiago Santos’s ACL, a blow the club must absorb just two days before arsenal vs losc in the Champions League at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. Santos, 24, suffered the injury during a challenge from a Le Havre midfielder in Saturday’s Ligue 1 match and is set to miss the rest of the season.
Lille Pursues Answers Over Santos Tackle
Lille described the challenge that injured Santos as uncontrolled and dangerous. The Le Havre player responsible was not shown a yellow or red card during the match, a decision the club is now disputing through official channels.
Lille has asked the French league and federation to explain the video review process used by match officials on the incident. The club has also requested that the tackle be referred to the disciplinary panel, in addition to weighing its own legal action.
What The Injury Means For Lille
Santos, a Portugal Under-21 international, had already dealt with a serious knee issue once before, having damaged his left knee in October 2024. This latest injury, to his right knee, ends his involvement for the remainder of the campaign.
His absence leaves Lille short at the back for the trip to London. The club is also without Romain Perraud because of a knock and Hamza Igamane, who is out with his own ACL injury. Nathan Ngoy is in line to return, offering some relief to a thin defensive group.
Lille arrives off a 3-2 Champions League loss to Real Betis in its group-stage opener, though domestic form has been steadier, with four wins and a draw from the first six Ligue 1 matches. Ethan Mbappe will not be available either, serving a suspension from his red card against Betis while also recovering from a three-week ankle injury.
Giroud’s Return And Arsenal’s Fitness Boost
The matchup carries a personal subplot for Olivier Giroud, who returns to Emirates Stadium for the first time with Lille after six seasons at Arsenal between 2012 and 2018. His visit comes as Arsenal enters the game with a healthier squad than its opponent.
Declan Rice, Max Dowman, Ezri Konsa and Kai Havertz have all been cleared to play, according to Sporting News. Arsenal will still be missing William Saliba with a back issue, Christos Tzolis with a hamstring problem and Piero Hincapie with an ankle injury.
Arsenal enters the match off a 1-0 win at Napoli in its Champions League opener and a 2-1 Premier League win over Leeds, part of a run in which the club has won four of its last five games.
