Kimi Antonelli’s path to becoming Formula 1‘s youngest world champion could run through Austin, Texas, with the Mercedes driver holding a chance to clinch the title at the United States Grand Prix on Oct. 25. The math depends largely on how he and George Russell performed at the Singapore Grand Prix, where 33 points were available between the sprint race and the main event.

Antonelli, 20, took his championship lead to a season-high 102 points over Russell after finishing third in Singapore, building on an 84-point advantage he held after the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. That cushion puts him within reach of sealing the title with five rounds still remaining on the calendar, a situation that has turned Austin into a potential coronation.

What Does Antonelli Need To Clinch At Austin?

To wrap up the championship in Texas, Antonelli needs to extend his points lead by 23 over the course of the weekend, according to Sky Sports. With a maximum of 125 points still on the table across the remaining five rounds after Austin, the scenario comes down to a simple equation: if Antonelli opens up enough of a gap that no rival can mathematically close it, he’s champion.

One of the cleanest paths: if Antonelli wins the race outright and Russell finishes ninth or lower, Antonelli would carry a 125-point lead into the final five rounds, exactly matching the maximum points still available. Under that outcome, he becomes champion as long as Lewis Hamilton doesn’t score enough points to stay within 124 of him, according to Sky Sports. A race win is worth 25 points on its own, which explains why that result does so much heavy lifting in the math.

Could A Countback On Wins Decide The Antonelli Title Clinch Scenarios?

There’s also a wins-countback wrinkle built into the Antonelli title clinch scenarios. Autosport reported that if Antonelli wins at the Circuit of the Americas and Russell finishes ninth or lower, Antonelli could be confirmed champion on a countback of race victories rather than pure points separation. Heading into the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli had eight wins this season against three for Russell, a gap wide enough that a tiebreaker would clearly favor the Mercedes driver.

How Did Singapore Set Up This Scenario?

The Singapore weekend mattered for more than just points gained. Russell’s power unit failed while he ran third during the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, triggering a grid penalty tied to an engine change that followed him into Singapore. Russell said he planned to go “all-out” in Singapore’s unusual daylight sprint to limit the damage, according to The Associated Press. The AP also noted that if Antonelli outscored Russell by 16 points across the Singapore weekend, he would arrive in Austin with a genuine shot at the title.

Antonelli’s consistency away from Singapore has reinforced his position. He finished second behind Max Verstappen in Malaysia, his sixth podium in seven races, before taking third in Singapore itself.

What About The Other Title Contenders?

Singapore also squeezed the rest of the field. The AP reported that if Antonelli outscored Lando Norris by 18 points there, Norris could be eliminated from title contention, with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen facing similar elimination risk that same weekend. By the time the paddock left Singapore, Verstappen trailed by 119 points, Leclerc by 125 and Norris by 139, according to Sky Sports. Heading into the United States Grand Prix, just 139 points separated the top six drivers in the standings, according to Autosport, a gap that is still mathematically alive but increasingly difficult to close with so few rounds left.

How Would This Compare Historically?

Clinching at Austin would make Antonelli champion with five rounds still to run, one shy of the record Michael Schumacher set in 2002, according to Autosport. Antonelli ripped off five consecutive wins from round two through round six this season, a stretch that established him as the championship favorite for most of the year despite an up-and-down rookie campaign in 2025.

Antonelli has downplayed the pressure of the looming number. “I know it’s very close, I know it’s there, but I just need to make sure that I keep doing the best I can,” he said, according to Sky Sports. “The mindset is always the same, to go out there and win and perform the best way I can.”

He added, “If I don’t do my job well, then the result won’t come. So in order to achieve what I want, I need to perform, as simple as that.”

What’s Next

The United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin on Oct. 25 is the next round on the calendar and the earliest point at which Antonelli can mathematically clinch the title. If the title isn’t settled there, five rounds remain with a maximum of 125 points still in play.
