Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo will miss up to eight weeks with a knee injury suffered against Ipswich Town on Saturday, manager Enzo Maresca said Monday. Semenyo came off the bench in the 76th minute of City’s 3-2 Premier League win and is expected to return around December.
The injury news comes as City also monitor Erling Haaland, who picked up a knock in the same match against Ipswich.
What Maresca Said
Maresca initially feared the damage was more serious before a scan eased those concerns. “It could be eight weeks, so now the most important thing is for him to recover,” Maresca said, according to ESPN.
“After the scan we feel much better because it’s not as bad as we expected,” Maresca said. “It could be eight weeks, so now the most important thing is for him to recover.”
Impact On City’s Depth
Semenyo’s absence removes City’s most likely cover for Erling Haaland, should the star striker need rest or get injured. The timing is especially significant given Haaland picked up a suspected ankle issue in the same Ipswich match.
Semenyo’s Season So Far
Semenyo joined Manchester City from Bournemouth in January and has scored two goals this season, both against Sunderland. The Ghana international had been used in a rotational role behind Haaland before the knee injury, making his depth presence notable for a City squad that leans heavily on its attacking options across competitions.
Haaland’s Status For AEK Athens
Haaland limped off against Ipswich with a suspected ankle issue. Maresca said “we’ll see” when asked if Haaland could feature against AEK Athens on Tuesday in the Champions League, stopping short of ruling him out.
What’s Next
City face AEK Athens on Tuesday in the Champions League. Semenyo is not expected back until December.
