Aleksander Barkov LTIR Delivers Huge 10-Game Blow

The Florida Panthers placed captain Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve Saturday with a left leg injury that will sideline him at least 10 games.

The Aleksander Barkov LTIR move became official Saturday, as the Florida Panthers placed their captain on long-term injured reserve with a left leg injury. The designation requires Barkov to miss at least 10 games and 24 days, and the Panthers have not said how long he will be out.

Barkov was hurt in the second period of Thursday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks. His left leg buckled as he battled for the puck in the corner with Sharks players Darnell Nurse and Zack Ostapchuk, and he left the game right away, according to Sports Illustrated.

Aleksander Barkov LTIR: what it means for the Panthers

The team has not detailed the severity of the injury or the next steps. The Associated Press reported that the Panthers were unsure of both, and coach Paul Maurice was expected to speak about it after Saturday’s practice.

This is separate from the right knee injury, a torn ACL and MCL, that wiped out Barkov’s entire 2025-26 season. He was only two games into his comeback, after playing more than 20 minutes in the season opener against Carolina, and had not recorded a point. Long-term injured reserve is an NHL designation that lets a team replace an injured player’s salary on its cap. A player must miss at least 10 games and 24 days before he can return, which is why the Aleksander Barkov LTIR placement sets a firm floor on his absence but not a ceiling. ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported there is optimism the injury is not season-ending while evaluations continue, according to Gino Hard.

Earliest return after the Barkov LTIR move

The earliest Barkov could play again is Oct. 27 at Winnipeg. The move also frees roughly $4 million in salary cap space, which could let Florida call up a player from its AHL affiliate in Charlotte.

The Panthers were already cap-constrained, so the roughly $4 million in space matters. Florida can use it to add depth while the Aleksander Barkov LTIR stint runs its course, and it can do so without sending out salary. The team has not announced a corresponding roster move yet, so fans should watch the Panthers’ transactions before Sunday night’s game in Anaheim.

Without Barkov, Florida’s top-line center duties are expected to shift to others in the lineup, with Sam Bennett and Anton Lundell likely to take on bigger roles. Eetu Luostarinen scored twice against San Jose as the Panthers rallied from a 3-0 deficit, and Florida needs that kind of scoring while its captain is out.

A tough start to Barkov’s comeback

Barkov had spent more than a year working back from the right knee surgery he underwent in September 2025. After his return in the opener against Carolina, he said the speed of the game was “really fast” but that he felt good and was not overthinking, according to Florida Hockey Now.

Against the Sharks, he had already been slashed on the wrist and caught by a stick to the face before the play that ended his night. The injury itself came during routine play in the corner, and the team has said it is still evaluating him before it shares more.

What’s next for Florida

The Panthers (1-0-1) play Sunday night at the Anaheim Ducks. Barkov helped Florida win the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025, and the Aleksander Barkov LTIR designation leaves a major test for a team that missed the playoffs last spring. Our Panthers-Sharks preview covers how Florida arrived in San Jose.
