The Minnesota Vikings are often known for their offensive stars. Last season, Sam Darnold, Aaron Jones, Justin Jefferson, and Jordan Addison led the team to one of the top records in the league. However, the defense also played a huge role. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores continues to be one of the best in the business, and the blitz-heavy scheme made opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable. The team is bringing back one of the most important piece, signing Byron Murphy to a massive three year deal.
Minnesota Vikings Re-Sign Byron Murphy
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported late Monday night that the Minnesota Vikings are signing the Pro Bowl cornerback to a three-year, $66 million contract. Byron Murphy was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals early in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played in Arizona for four seasons before coming to Minnesota. He has been one of the best cornerbacks in the league over the past two years.
Since coming to the Minnesota Vikings, he has amassed 138 total tackles, 27 passes defended, two forced fumbles, and nine interceptions. Six of those interceptions came in the 2024 season. While it would be unlikely that the team would go 14-3 in back-to-back seasons, the Vikings still want to be contenders in the very tough NFC North. Signing Murphy had to be on the top of the priority list, especially because this season rests on the shoulders of JJ McCarthy.
All Eyes On JJ McCarthy
Sam Darnold has officially signed with the Seattle Seahawks. The Minnesota Vikings decided they were okay letting the former second overall pick walk in favor of former Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy. After spending last season on the bench because of a knee injury, he will now take the reins of the offense.
The good news is that he has plenty of weapons. Minnesota brought back Jones on a two-year deal after his career year. A good run game is the best friend of any young quarterback. Jefferson, Addison, and TJ Hockenson are quality pass-catchers as well. Don’t discount head coach Kevin O’Connell! He has shown he can get the most out of his quarterbacks and will now have the entire offseason to get McCarthy ready for week one.
Final Thoughts
It is a massive deal for Byron Murphy. $22 million a year is nothing to sneeze at. However, it is money well spent. He is only 26 years old and in the prime of his career. With Flores calling the shots, they need a lockdown corner on the outside. Both sides benefit from this deal greatly. Can the Vikings make it out of a tough division and make it back to the postseason in 2025?
