The Washington Commanders have been busy this offseason. It hasn’t just been in free agency. The front office has pulled off two massive trades. They landed former All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers for a fifth-round pick. Then, a few days ago, they sent a boatload of picks to the Houston Texans for left tackle Laremy Tunsil. The team is sending a message: We are ready to compete for a Super Bowl. The team made another important signing today, bringing back quarterback Marcus Mariota on a one-year deal.
Washington Commanders Re-Sign Marcus Mariota
NFL Network’s Tom Peilissero reports it is a one-year, $8 million deal for the former second-overall pick. He notes that other teams tried to lure him away, but Marcus Mariota decided he wanted to continue to back up star quarterback Jayden Daniels. Having a veteran backup quarterback isn’t a bad thing. Last season, the former Oregon Duck appeared in three games, throwing for 364 yards and four touchdowns.
His play style is similar to Daniels’s, making him a great mentor for the young quarterback. The days of Mariota being a starter in the league are likely over, but he has carved out a spot as a quality backup option, which is never a bad place to be. We’ve seen many players extend their careers by settling into a backup role.
2025 Outlook
The Washington Commanders look like one of the best teams in the NFC on paper. One issue for this team is that they are no longer a surprise. Last season, no one expected anything from this team. They were rebuilding and had signed a ton of players who many believed were past their prime. After making the NFC Championship Game last year, expectations are through the roof.
The biggest challenge might be getting out of the division. Phildelphia has kept their roster together for the most part and will undoubtedly be the favorite to repeat as conference champions. Having to play them twice a year is tough. Still, Washington has the talent and might not be done in this free agency period. Can they usurp the Eagles in the division in 2025?
