Michigan Wolverines Hire Biff Poggi As Associate Head Coach | February 3, 2025

Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines football program will be entering their second season with Sherrone Moore at the helm. His first season did not reach the expectations from their National Championship run in 2023. But, there were bright spots to end the 2024 campaign such as beating Ohio State and Alabama.

With players leaving Michigan for the National Football League and others joining the team, there have also been coaching hires or, in this case, bringing back a familiar face. The Michigan Wolverines have re-hired Biff Poggi as their associate head coach for 2025. Poggi was on staff under previous Head Coach Jim Harbaugh in 2016.

Michigan Hires Biff Poggi As Associate Head Coach

Biff Poggi was a part of the Michigan coaching staff in 2016 and most recently during the 21-22 season as an associate head coach. After his stint with the Wolverines in 2022, Poggi was hired at Charlotte. His time with Charlotte only lasted two seasons as he went 6-16. His lack of success led to him being fired from the school.

Poggi began his coaching career back in 1987 at Citadel before heading to St Frances Academy in Baltimore, where he took on many different roles. He seems to be more of a fit as an assistant rather than a head coach seeing that he has more notably held losing records in recent years.

Being that Poggi has been on the Michigan coaching staff within the last couple of years, he is very familiar with the program as Moore was the offensive coordinator during the 2021-22 football season. Now with Moore under a different position and a new offensive coordinator after relieving Kirk Campbell of his duties last month, having someone with experience should boost the team’s confidence.

Wolverines Transfers and Additions

After a subpar 8-5 season in 2024, the Michigan Wolverines are hoping for a better outcome this fall. Their schedule looks to be competitive, but not as tough as last season. Since Moore pulled off the two shocking upsets to their arch-rival Ohio State and Alabama, the future looks bright in Ann Arbor.

Moore did bring in the number one recruit Bryce Underwood. As a result, the top recruit enrolled in school early to get a head start with the upcoming squad. The Wolverines also gained some veteran talent with transfer players like Running Back Justice Hayes, Defensive End Damon Payne, and Mikey Keene at the quarterback position.

Michigan 2025 Football Schedule

Michigan will face three non-conference opponents before the Big Ten season kicks off in 2025. They seem to have a much more favorable schedule in playing teams such as USC, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Purdue, and Northwestern just to name a few conference foes.

If things come together and the team culture stays intact, the football team should be in good shape under its second-year head coach. Moore brings intense energy and passion to the game, highlighting his players and all of the effort and time that they put into the program.

Final Thoughts

Moore hired seven new coaches to his staff last season. After Harbaugh left for the NFL, the Wolverines had to start from scratch in trying to find a new identity after being successful over the previous three years. Adding another coach with many years of experience should help the players continue to grow and learn heading into the 2025 season.

It will certainly look different for Poggi working under a younger head coach. As long as the coaches and staff can develop the players and put the young men in a good position for success, it is safe to say that the recent hire made by Moore could work in their favor with all of the new players that have made the decision to play in Ann Arbor.
