Who Is The Dallas Cowboys WR1?: ESPN’s Top WR Rankings Spark New Debate

The Dallas Cowboys have something no other NFL team can claim in ESPN’s latest wide receiver rankings: two pass-catchers ranked among the league’s top seven.

CeeDee Lamb checked in at No. 6, while George Pickens landed immediately behind him at No. 7 in ESPN’s annual survey of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. While seeing both Cowboys receivers make the list was impressive, it was one particular quote that turned heads across the NFL.

For the first time since Lamb emerged as Dallas’ top target, there appears to be legitimate debate over who the Cowboys’ true No. 1 receiver is.

Pickens’ breakout 2025 campaign changed the conversation around Dallas’ passing attack. After posting a career-best 1,400 receiving yards and finishing as the Cowboys’ leading pass-catcher, the former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver earned widespread praise from NFL decision-makers.

One anonymous coordinator told ESPN that Pickens is now the player he focuses on most when preparing for Dallas.

“It’s Pickens,” the coordinator said when asked which Cowboys receiver is the biggest concern in his game plan. “He has emerged.”

That’s a significant statement considering Lamb has spent years establishing himself as one of the NFL’s premier receivers.

Another coach went even further in his praise of Pickens’ unique skill set.

“One of the best I’ve ever seen at the contested catch,” the coach said.

Those comments reflect the growing respect Pickens has earned after his dominant 2025 season.

Why Pickens Has Entered the Conversation

Just a year ago, there wasn’t much debate about Dallas’ receiving hierarchy. Lamb was firmly established as the Cowboys’ top weapon after multiple 1,000-yard seasons and years of elite production. Then came Pickens’ breakout year.

His 1,400 receiving yards showcased his ability to take over games and make difficult catches downfield. His physical style and ability to win contested throws gave the Cowboys an element their offense hadn’t consistently possessed before.

As a result, some observers now believe Pickens has become Dak Prescott’s most dangerous target.

The fact that an NFL coordinator openly identified Pickens as the focal point of his defensive game plan only adds fuel to that argument.

CeeDee Lamb Still Has Strong Support Around the League

Despite Pickens’ rise, plenty of NFL evaluators still believe Lamb remains Dallas’ top receiver.

One NFC scout pointed to Lamb’s complete skill set and the attention he commands from opposing defenses.

“With his ability to separate and make big plays, the attention he demands creates opportunities for others in the offense,” the scout said. “He’s still on the short list of guys who give you problems consistently.”

Another coordinator predicted a major rebound season for Lamb in 2026.

“I expect him to have a bounce-back year,” the coach said. “He was never quite the same off that ankle injury.”

Those comments highlight an important piece of context that often gets overlooked when comparing the two receivers.

Injuries Played a Major Role in 2025

Lamb’s production dipped last season, but there were clear reasons why.

The veteran wideout missed three full games because of injury and exited several others early. That limited his opportunities and played a significant role in Pickens finishing with superior numbers.

Meanwhile, Pickens benefited from a larger role whenever Lamb was unavailable. Some of his most productive performances came during stretches when the Cowboys’ longtime No. 1 receiver wasn’t on the field.

That’s why many around the league remain hesitant to declare a changing of the guard based on one season alone.

Who Is Really the Cowboys’ No. 1 Receiver?

The answer depends on how much weight is placed on recent production versus long-term consistency.

Pickens has momentum after a career year and clearly has the respect of opposing coaches. His ability to dominate contested catches and stretch the field makes him one of the NFL’s most dangerous playmakers.

However, Lamb’s resume remains difficult to ignore.

Before 2025, Lamb had already posted four 1,000-yard seasons and consistently served as the centerpiece of the Cowboys’ passing game. He has proven year after year that he can produce regardless of defensive attention.

For now, Lamb still deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Pickens may have narrowed the gap significantly, but one exceptional season isn’t enough to completely erase years of elite production from Lamb. If Pickens outperforms him again in 2026, the debate could look much different this time next year.

Until then, the Cowboys may simply have one of the NFL’s best problems to have: two receivers talented enough to make coaches argue over who the real No. 1 is.
