New York Knicks owner James Dolan is known for airing his grievances against the NBA. The owner has been caught up in plenty of controversies and has taken heavy criticism over the years for head coaching and front office hires. A recent report by ESPN revealed the owner has another grievance with the NBA. He sent a letter to the league demanding more transparency from the league in terms of finances.
New York Knicks Owner James Dolan Sends Letter To The League
ESPN’s Tim Bontemps obtained a letter from New York Knicks owner James Dolan to the league office and the board of governors. Dolan has been fighting with the league over finances for years, most recently criticizing the new television deal. The letter asks the league for “increased financial transparency and operating efficiency.” The Knicks want a clearer picture of where exactly finances are being allocated. The NBA doesn’t just have one league. The WNBA and G-League are also budget items, and Dolan is looking for more clarity.
“Despite the League’s swelling costs and headcount, the budget materials provided by the League during its annual September budget review are limited in scope. Accordingly, to improve the League’s financial transparency and operating efficiency, the Knicks propose that the League adopts a zero-based method of budgeting operating costs, capital expenditures, and headcount for all League operations and initiatives (including Affiliate Leagues, such as the Basketball Africa League, WNBA, and G League).”
One of the specific points was the increased headcount in the league office. According to the letter, the league’s budget grew by 8%, with 800 more people on the payroll. Dolan wants to make sure funds are being used appropriately. However, there is a self-serving nature in all of this.
Lots Of Layers
This is an issue with lots of layers to it. Part of what is making the New York Knicks owner unhappy is that he is scared the league is siphoning off revenue from the teams. Dolan’s value is based on the value of his team. He wants to protect his assets. However, he has also shown over the years that he loves to combat the NBA on pretty much everything. While financial transparency isn’t a bad thing, it’s hard to take the source it is coming from seriously.
It will be interesting to see if any other owners share James Dolan’s concerns. Finances can be a touchy subject in any industry, but when the industry is this big, there is increased scrutiny. Will the league respond in any way, or is this just another one of Dolan’s antics?
